Shipping trailers and the fruit fly gate

One of our members, not often here was doing a security load to RAAF Base Edinburg.

• The inspector asked: what are you carrying?,
• Reply: don't know
• The inspector: do you have an inventory?

• The inspector: what does the consignment note say?
• Reply: RAAF Base Edinburg
• The inspector: can I have a look inside the truck?
• Reply: No
• The inspector: You're not going to let me look inside the truck?
• Reply: No
• The inspector: You'd better be on your way then.

I would think your main concern would be their interest in potential dirt or mud on or in the trailer. It seems that you can drive a dirty car into the state, but a vehicle on a truck (or trailer) can get the third degree over dirt and mud. I have known people to unload a car off a trailer to drive through the Quarantine stop, then reload it back on the trailer afterwards. About four years ago we moved to WA and had two vehicles in the removalist' semi with our furniture packed around them. It was 2am and raining and the inspector was insisting with the truck driver that they wanted the cars unloaded for inspection! They could see that one was a spotless partly restored 86" that had never been on the road but they insisted. It was eventually resolved that the truck could proceed to Perth and they were inspected there (after the furniture was removed).

To seal the trailer may invite suspicion that something untoward lurks inside?

Jeff. Ring the WA Quarantine Dept in Perth and ask your question. I have had good email clarification of a lawn mower import question previously. You could tape an email answer to the trailer for reference at the border if required.
