Redarc Tow Pro in a D3

Hi all you "Tin Tent Towers,
I am about to go down the track of fitting an EBC to the D3.
The Redarc "Tow Pro" comes with a remote switch knob where you can activate the brakes manually, change the program (on road Vs off road) and the braking force.
With this in mind, and the fact that most of the wiring is already at the rear of the car in the D3, I wondered whether I could "extend" the interconnection cable between the control box and the remote knob and leave the control box at the rear of the car.
I asked Red Arc whether this cable could be extended and to what length.
The reply came back in a matter of minutes (great customer service!). Thanks for your email.

A standard CAT5 Ethernet cable of up to 10 metres in length can be used between the remote head and the base unit of the towpro.

These cables can be bought off the shelf in various lengths at most electrical retailers – such as Jaycar.

So I am thinking of following Sneigy's wiring guide for the D3 trailer brake controller but leaving the control box tucked away in the rear quarter panel and just running the Cat V to the front of the car. I imagine this method will also delete the voltage drop issue by running the main feed from the back to the front and back again. (if I didn't pull the feed through the firewall from the battery)
Has anyone mounted a Tow Pro yet and can they see any issued I haven't considered yet?

    Cheers, Matti

Yes I have, and can't see any issues with what you want to do assuming you have a big enough supply feeding the tow pro (25A)

I fitted a controller 6 weeks ago using Sneigy's guide. He did recommend running a live straight from the battery and through the firewall. It was a short length for the feed using this method. Only 2 wires to run to the back.
As far as the cat5 goes, I'm sure it will be fine, remember if it is a big van, it will draw serious amps on a long downhill.

    Did you find that easy???
Was it a straight fit to the battery and did you put a circuit braker in it for safety???? Only ask as I will be fitting one to my D4 into the future.
    Thanks
    Andrew

Hi Andrew, yes the instructions are very clear. Quite straightforward job, used the 30amp breaker as per instructions. Only difference was the install point of the diode. It is back inside the car again on the my14 model.

Sneigy is a legend, very helpful. I am happier knowing it is fitted properly and the ecu is protected.

Exciting install when your car is 24 hours old!

    Go for it.

The full guide to fitting the Tow Pro into a D3 is here. http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/...red-photo.html

There also is the D4 version also as a sticky in the same area(D3/D4/RRS)

Sure did and no issues at all - I think it ended up being a 5m cable length of Cat 5 with RJ45 connectors. I have a V2 model.
I note the newer model (Elite V3) of TowPro has a different 8 pin plug when I put one in the son's Mitsubishi Triton the other week so I am not sure how that is extended.

I have the new version and it needs a redarc extension cable, have now decided that I won't mount it in the rear as I don't have any room in the left compartment.
Will probably be near the centre console.
