Sadly Andy, the day of the old qlder sitting on the same stool at the same bar for 40 years is nearly over,,,, and yes they drank pony's of xxxx due to the ambient temps, left the days drinking money on the bar( next to their ciggies)for the barmaid to sort out, some fine examples had bar corners named after them,,,,

Leaving your money on the bar.
Well I remember those days, and more even. After dad died, I went on a bit of a bender. I used to walk in pay day, having just filled the car, put what was left of my wage on the bar. They'd feed and water (grog till I was blind as) me every day/evening, supply me with smokes for the week, and give me some change to get smoko's etc.

Ahh what a life it was, a total waste of about 6 months of my life,,, never again

Some 20 odd years ago I took a newly arrived 'local' who hailed from somewhere near Sheffield in the UK to our local country pub for a couple of beers. I bought a round and, as you do, left the change on the bar for upcoming rounds.
My mate looked a bit uncomfortable and asked if I was going to put the change away. "Not a worry" I said, "we're all locals here no ones going to pinch it".
Its not that he explained, back 'home' you never left your money on the bar as this was seen as skiting that you had a quid and were therefore better off than others. It was definitely not the done thing to do.
