    Camper Trailer Weights

Recently Vicroads have modified the weighbridge at their local Traffic Testing Station on the Sturt Highway
(west of South Merbein) so that it has an external digital readout display that is on at all times and can be
used by any vehicle to check their weight. I believe this is a good thing and should have been available years
ago so that people can do their utmost to comply with regulations.
We recently purchased a second hand camper trailer and I have taken the camper module off it
to do a few mods, so I thought I would take the trailer out and run it over the weighbridge to see what numbers
it throws up. I towed it behind my series 3 swb.
The camper is not a Branded camper as such, but the trailer was built by a commercial trailer manufacturer and
then the owner had a the canvas top section made up by a mob who build them commercially. It's based on a
7' x 5' trailer with 500mm deep sides as per the design of most off road campers, a long pull, with a large cargo
box, and a spare wheel also mounted on it. However it has lower mudguards, and currently has 16" Toyota rims
with low profile tyres. I will change it to high guards and to Land Rover stud pattern hubs/wheels.
The trailer is unbraked, so its has to stay under 750 kg. loaded.

I also took a few weights of the series 3 with and without the trailer attached.
This was with a heavy trunk full of recovery gear and spare bits n pieces in it, a full tank of fuel, two ten litre jerry
cans, each of water and petrol, and two dogs, but not the driver

    Weights. Trailer on bridge 400kg.
Jockey wheel only 100kg (it still had some canvas for the side curtains of the annexe in it) (I assume this reflects tow ball weight).
Trailer wheels on the weighbridge whilst attached to vehicle, but vehicle not on weighbridge. 320kg.

Series 3 both axles on the bridge 1540kg
both axles on the bridge and trailer attached 1620kg.

front axle only on the bridge (it has a Holden motor) 740kg.
front axle only on the bridge with trailer attached 700kg.

rear axle only on the bridge 800
rear axle only on the bridge with trailer attached 900kg.

Once I finish my mods to the trailer and get the top camper section back on it, I will weigh it again
empty and then with our camping gear in it. I was surprised that it came in at 400kg., as this doesn't
leave a lot of margin for the camper section and payload. I may have to fit brakes to it.
I hope some find these figures interesting, I certainly did.

    Cheers, Mick.
