    Towing with a Landie

There have been some interesting discussions regarding towing. Almost every combination seems to struggle with either vehicle GVM, Trailer GVM and GCM. It would be good to collect the actual specifications of vehicles, trailers and GCM that people are using and how they are dealing with the problems.

    My setuo

We tow a Kedron Caravan with a Discovery 4 SDV6, 8 speed. We spend three to four months a year on the road. The tare weight of the Kedron is 2740kg with GVM 3500kg. Maximum ball weight is 350kg. We run consistently at GCM limit. To begin with the D4 has no problems either power or stability wise with towing at these limits. We’ve done this with two previous Landies a D4 and a D3.
Our approach is to put everything over a weighbridge separately then combined. We own a ball weight scale and use this to measure changes to ball weight as we add various loads to the Kedron forward and to the rear of the axles. With four water tanks the differences in filling one and leaving another empty can vary the ball weight from 260kg to 365 kg.
We used bathroom scales to weigh and list everything we added.
The first thing to understand is that everything is freight.
Over time we have been able to understand where to place things to get balance, which to leave out and which to modify to make lighter eg we carry various blocks of wood - we changed from hardwood to compressed pine.
On previous vehicles we had a bull bar, long range tank and spare wheel bracket, they are good but are all freight. We don’t drive at night so don’t figure we needed the bull bar. We carry a couple of plastic jerry cans and fill these if we get into areas where we need extra fuel (fuel is freight also). Because we don’t have the drop tank we don’t need the spare wheel carrier.
    Enough for the moment.

Not a bad report so to speak,, thanks for that.
Having just gone to a van ourselves, I need to do similar to work out what's what and where to put things.
It escapes me as to why they build in sooo many cupboards in a van, considering weight limitations, this is just begging for trouble with people looking to fill every hole available.

    Towing with a Landie

The way you do it is pretty much the only way....that is using a weigh bridge weighing the individual axles on the car and the trailer.......with tanks full plus all your food and clothing.

Biggest thing is a good number of people don’t even know the max. axle weight of there car, it’s GVM and the ATM of the trailer......

I used to weigh in on a regularly as I had a weigh bridge at work.

I’ve sold the camper and now only have the defer.....which I haven’t weight since converting it to a camper van/motor home/ pop top.....

I weighed my tdi defer way back when we were fully loaded for an extended trip, I was over on the front axle (40kg from memory) but under for all other limits.....I selected 1st gear and continued on our trip

I than did a similar trip with a hi-lux, stretching my memory but I was over on rear axle and GVM (~280kg over)..again selected first gear, rolled off the weigh bridge and started our trip.
