I had a look at Vitrifrigio which I thought were pretty good, on some models the compressor can be mounted remotely which can give more fitting options but in the end opted for an EvaKool upright. The clincher here was the insulation thickness which leaves all others behind. The idea here is that thermal efficiency should be superior to the rest for better power consumption efficiency. I opted for the 146 litre and after looking for around 12 months found a new 2nd hand one for $1K which is pretty good value My only concern is noise level (I'm still at installation stage) but it doesn't seem any noisier than a pair of Engels, only time will tell. The EvaKool is 12/24v only (no 240v) which is not a problem for me. There's some pretty good older Dometic compressor fridges that come up from time to time, particularly the stainless marine types but they always seem to be interstate and get snapped up pretty quickly. The newer Dometic/Waeco compressor uprights seem pretty crappy/plasticy by comparison which I guess is why the older BD35 types are snapped up.

Thanks for that - I’ll do some research on the EvaKool see if they make something that will fit. Adds another one to my list... Lack of 240 volt is not an issue here either.

Well that was quick research! Found one straight away - https://www.mygenerator.com.au/evako...CABEgIEZPD_BwE

Specs are very good - up to 60 degrees below ambient and less power draw too. Might have to go find one to look at. Not sure how I’d make it look right in a 47 year old van but I can live with that... Caravan Fridges

Compressor modules with a cooling plate can be bought from several suppliers for 'home made' fridges, why not remove the 3 way internals from your old Electrolux (or similar) and keep the original looks with a modern refrigeration unit ? Just be careful as these old absorption fridges use ammonia refrigerant.

We have a Vitrifrigo in the new Van, admittedly we haven't used it yet but the Qld repairer lives down the road, and we bought it secondhand and worked a treat when tested, time will tell I guess. It is solely 12 volt

    Hadn't thought of that...

The fridge in the Viscount is in Excellent condition internally and it suits the era of the van. So many choices...

How hot is it up there at the moment? If you want to conduct a scientific experiment for me, turn it on, insert a few beers and wait - when it is really hot, test said beer and let me know if it's cold enough.

We couldnt see a need for a freezer either,, we bought the freezer model and run it dialed down. Best money we've ever spent.

Hadn't thought of this either - so the freezer model can be turned down enough that it doesn't freeze salads, etc? (Not for me obviously but I do need to consider SWMBO ).

Is the thermostat a true thermostat or like my 38 litre Engel that is a bit of hit and miss and changes temp a bit when the outside temp changes?
