My apologies, the title, well, left you wide open.

BTW, mine is 1.7m long. It allows for gas bottles & jockey wheels etc. & then full opening of my ex D2 rear door without catching on anything. Absolutely no science involved in the length.

    Does length relate to age?

As this weirdo with a classic (In Vic) sits here eating breaky this morning looking out the window of the Viscount to this -

I thought I’d go take some measurements for you mate.

Van is a 1971 Viscount - 19’ long overall in the body.
Draw bar is 1230mm back to the chassis.
Length from centre line between the wheels to the tip of the draw bar is 3,830mm so 2,600mm from the front of the chassis.

Hope that helps - in reality I would make it longer if I wasn’t worried about the looks and originality and not sure if I will or won’t yet. The longer drawbar I put on the old Franklin made a huge difference to how it towed and it towed much better than this one with it done.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    Ok,,,

DBL = the length from the coupling to the centre of the axles(s)

if you have a fixation with the front of your van,,, measure its distance to the centre of the axle(s)

FWIW Pedro there didn't seem to be any hard and fast rules way back in the day, I remember dad talking about this when he was modifying our old Newlands van for off road use back in the mid 70's. (Flipped drop axle, reinforced draw bar, shock absorbers, generator, etc)

He always reckoned most vans and trailers for that matter had too short a draw bar length, that a longer distance from the tow ball to the axle towed better (more stability) and most importantly backed more easily as it slowed the reaction time down.
