Could you actually live long-term in a van?

Partner and I are planning a 12 month trip. Main reason i bought the D4 to tow the van. 16ft New Age off road van which we have done a few trips in to make sure it can handle the rough stuff and to iron out any problems. House to be let out. One son in Byron another in Perth. Plan to do a figure 8 of Australia and be at their places as they have birthdays for them selves and the grandchildren. The van is small but as we will be chasing the sun, then no need for a big inside. Main thing is to keep SWMBO happy. Ie satelite TV, Air Con, Heater, and Gennie. Own shower and toilet and its like a home away from home. Best part will be trying to work out where to stop and put the feet up.

That only works if your current house is in the city. :)

In the town where I live and the ones in new England where I spent some time this week, even very good houses are selling for 4 to 5 hundred thousand.

Mick, you have not seen our finished caravan. I could possibly live in ours permanently. We designed it to our requirements and suits me very well. My thought is if you design your caravan to your requirements then defiantly you could live in it permanently. Without the need to sell your property.

No, but I'd be interested. I'm keen on compact housing. We have nearly finished a conversion of a garage into a studio at our Maleny house. Just have to install the Murphy bed in the wall and do some finishing work. I also enjoy comparing caravan designs. Some of the compact hybrid caravans are very space efficient. Typical Aussie housing is very wasteful of space, I think.

Mixed reports from these long-term caravan residents, but Queensland seems to be the most popular place for it.

All depends on what you're happy with!

No problem living in a van - I spent years living out of a 36 inch sleeper, so a 14'6" van should be sheer luxury!

Well, by the time we clear all the debt, selling the house should leave us with around $150k.

The place we're planning to setup a base in, has dwellings starting from around $20k up. Rates are only a few hundred per annum, and the Shire Council tends to pretty much leave you alone.

Whilst it is a long way to the nearest capital city, the Simpson is just up the road, and the Flying Doctor calls by once a week.

What more could you want?
