2100 kg towbar to 2000 kg trailer - Legal?

    Hello All,

Can someone please confirm if it would be legal to tow a 2000 kg rated trailer with a tow-bar that is rated at 2100 kg (Hayman Reese) ?

Is there a set legal difference in the capacity between the stated trailer rating and the tow-bar rating?

Is 100 kg extra in the tow-bar at 2100 kg too close?

    Apparently, 2100 kg is a VY 2004 Commodore Wagon's maximum tow-bar capacity.

My current tow-bar is only a 750 kg one; so I have upgrade it.

I am looking at buying a flat top trailer

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Hello Tombie,

Yes really... the tow-bar is on order and I will be informed when it is ready to be fitted. Looking at which 2000 kg trailer to buy in the next couple of weeks.

Not sure how "really" answers my question - it was not a pretend one and one that was not meant to be inane.

I just do not know the legislative requirements and hoping someone else does.

Better to ask a dumb question than to make a stupid mistake.

I have previously had local tow-bar fitters say that the VY wagon could not be fitted with anything more than a 750 kg capacity tow-bar. Then I walked past a Commodore wagon the same model as mine in the IGA supermarket fitted with a 2100 kg TAG this morning. "Hmmm well that is funny!" So I contacted Hayman Resse and TAG and they both make a wagon specific 2100kg tow-bar.

A number of Holden forums also debated whether Commodore wagons could be fitted with "Heavy Duty" tow-bars rated above 750 kg. So it is not such a clear-cut thing.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

Towing upto and including the specified figure is all legal. The 100kg difference is in your favour so should be fine. Just ensure your trailer stays under the 2000kg limit as I would image the Crumpledoor would not fair too well with big loads.

Yep, all legal but not sure how the Commodore would handle 2 tonne. I used to tow around 1,500Kg with mine many moons ago and that was a struggle but the odd short trip heavier should be doable, but far from ideal IMO.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    Hello Paul,

Thanks for the clear answer. After an interstate run for furniture and gardening stuff, it will be used where my current little 6 x 4 ft box trailer just does not cut the mustard. Like with full sheets of Versilux. A couple of suppliers for other items have specified that they only accept trailers to pick up goods that can be loaded with a fork lift. I am looking after my Commodore as it looks like I have to hang on to it for a while yet.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

    Hello Gavin,

Yes - I fully agree with you about towing with the Commodore.

I have been researching flat top trailers and the ones starting at 8 x 5 feet and heading up to 10 x 7 most commonly are rated at 1.5 to 2 tonne capacity - manufactured here in Queensland. Both sizes are more than my current 750 kg tow-bar. Might as well go up to the 2100 kg bar

It is the length and width and ability to load with a fork lift that I am looking out for and hope not to load them up to 2000 kg.

    Kind regards
    Lionel

The reason for my “really” response was that you answered your own question. Ratings are just that. The rules are really that simple.

    1) Towbar must be rated to/above the intended weight to be towed.

    2) Vehicle must be rated to tow to/above the intended weight to be towed.

The lower of the 2 items above is the legal maximum.

No grey areas in this one.

What you must have for anything rated at 2,000kg or over is breakaway brakes and controller fitted.
Most 2t trailers are actually 1,999kg rated.

The Commodore won’t have much hassle dealing with it, it just won’t be a Rocket. So occasional trips will be fine.
