    Recommendation for Brake Service

    Hi all,

I replaced the drums on my 1989 van but it still brakes more heavily on one side (ie after doing a brake adjustment by the book). I havent replaced the backing plates but I voltage appeared even. I dont want to throw more parts at it. I would rather take it to a reputable van place. Anyone got any recommendations? (I might get them to replace the shocks on the independent suspension while it is there as I am time poor).

    Cheers

Can't help with a place to take it sorry but if we're talking drum electric brakes, the magnets are wear items just like the drums and should be replaced when the drums are - you can have even voltage to each side but if one magnet is more worn that the other it will be less efficient than the other side - the magnet pulls into the side of the drum and the rotation of the drum causes the braking action. I wouldn't buy cheap magnets though - you can get them for $12 to $15 each but I'd be looking for some higher quality items myself - had an issue with a friends trailer that we couldn't work out after a full brake service - after exhausting all other possibilities we threw another new set in and that fixed it - magnets can be buggered or worn without showing visible signs of this.

Many thanks mate. From memory I did repalce the magnet also. It had me buggered at the time and my knowledge was exhausted so keen to get it to someone who knows their quirks. Cheers mate

Cool, if the drums and magnets have been done it usually comes down to adjustment - I just wing this and adjust them until they feel right then road test to confirm that both sides work evenly - could just need to play with the adjustment a bit.
