Just bought an oztent 420 cruiser tent and it states you need to "condition" the tent to ensure its water proof. So I did. I figured it might leak a little but the fly let a lot of water in. The instructions state you need to repeat the process until it doesn't leak but this seems excessive.

Anyone else had any experience with these tents?

I just checked online and if it's this one:

Oztrail Fast Frame Tourer 420 Tent | Snowys Outdoors

then it's polyester rather than canvas, it doesn't need conditioning and it shouldn't be leaking!

Yeah that's what I thought!it was only that the instruction manual recommended it (I assumed for the seams) that I went it down.

I'm so glad I did cos being in a storm in this tent would be a nightmare.

I'm now looking at waterproofing solutions for both the fly and tent. I will contact oztrail to see what they say, but as I don't have the receipt (i got the tent slightly used) I don't like my chances.

Not fit for purpose . . . . You're entitled to return it and get your money back.

It's a shame because I've been a user of OzTent since they first started, maybe 20years+. We had the early RV2 series and still have the RV4 with all the annex enclosures, side panels etc. Can honestly say we have never had to "condition" the tent or fly, nor had leak issues, ever.
Nearly floated away once at Point Plummer as the floor wraps up about 100mm around the sides and we had setup in what became a watercourse after heavy rain, but that was good fun, and a lesson learnt.
With the RV2 we travelled the Gibson and Great Sandy then into the Pilbara and Kimberly . . 20 minutes to completely set up camp. Great trips.
Can highly recommend the RV series as an alternative . . they can be set up in pairs if you need more bed space.
    Good luck and safe travels

See prev posts. It’s an Oztrail, not an Oztent.

BTW - Oztent still OK, but the new internally coated poly cotton canvas does not breathe nearly as well as the original Oztent canvas in our experience. We now have an RX-4 which is good, and doesn’t leak using the siliconised nylon fly.
    Cheers
