I will admit I thought the fridge should be a bit colder but the freezer works great. I would also say it's the same on 240v , the fridge is cool but reckon it's closer to 5 degrees than 3 degrees .

One of the primary reasons 3 Way Fridges have been preferred over compressor fridges was that the 3 Way Fridge was quiet. [ virtually silent ]

New compressor fridges are now much quieter and combined with the efficiency are more attractive, especially as you do not need a gas bottle.

There are two ways to operate a 3 way fridge with 12v.

The correct wiring of a 3 way fridge is to run a dedicated power supply from the CRANKING battery all the way to the fridge and NEVER run the fridge from either the house batteries or from the cabling powering/charging the house batteries.

The second option is if you have a modern 3 way fridge [ “T” rated ], don’t run it while driving.

The newer [ no more than about 5 or 6 years old ) “T” rated 3 way fridges can maintain a cool temperature for many hours, as long as you don’t keep going to them.

I have quite a few customers who have taken their caravans across the top in summer without powering them while driving and have not had problems.

The trick is to get the fridge as cold as possible while on gas or 240 before starting the days drive and these new fridges remain cool for many hours.

A simple “driveway test” at home can tell if your fridge will remain cool enough when not powered for long periods.

We usually fill the freezer section of the 3 way fridge with 500ml water bottles and have them frozen using gas/240v before we head off on the road and have to use the 12v option, This helps quite a bit to keep things cooler for longer

I have had a few 3 way fridges But I would Never buy another one simply because the compressor 240v/12v fridges are far more efficiant and you don't have to muck about swithching from 12v to 240v to gas all the time.

I like to run my beer fridge at -1C and getting a 3 way fridge down to that temp and keeping it there in 40C+ is pretty tough using the 12v setting on a 3 way.

You can rule out 240v as I wont be running a penny so do you run battery in day , gas in the night.. or full time gas .. I'm assuming 12v would run down reasonably quick even with a decent battery capacity in the van.

    How do you do it.
    Cheers Bulletman
Recently did our first trip in our van.
Ran fridge on gas for 2 weeks. kept very cold and surprised how little gas we used.

I saw those in store, not a very practical shape but would be ok for picnic type duties.

After 12 months on the road, we'd had enough of our full size dumetic.. I mean apart from warm beer on hot days, the bloody door fell off, no joke.
We replaced it with a fullsize Bushman. If Engal made a full size one---- . 6 montbs on during our second summer and the Bushman has been perfect...
