    Caravan Rollout Awning

How are users securing their awning to the van to ensure it does not detach during transit. Having just had the misfortune of completely destroying an awning because it became detached whilst travelling over a badly uneven road surface I am seeking a solution so there is not a repeat episode.

Someone has suggested to use dog collars to strap the awning roller in the retracted position.

Maybe someone has a better solution.

My van has a carefree awning and it has clips that hold the horizontal arms to the vertical arms but cant remember what holds it to the van, must be some clips further up. Some velcro ties will work or even some short tie down straps from bunnings.

4 x XL velcro watch straps. Mine has a type of rubber block that slots in a groove to lock the arms together but I just go 4 velcro watch straps and wrap 1 above 1 below the block on each arm.
Travelled to el questro and the bungles plus corrigations to 80 mile beach and pardo station with no issues so far.
I am a very novice caravaner only been at it 3 weeks so there is possibly far better ideas out there.

    New Awning

My new awning was installed today and it is interesting Dometic have recognized the previous design was unsatisfactory. The latching of the vertical arms in the transit position has been greatly improved.

To lower my level of apprehension I will apply the dog collar solution for securing the vertical arms to the awning roller support brackets and always retract the awning if there is any semblance of wind.

Hope my insurance company comes to the party with the bill.

Old post but been doing stuff to the van so i answer this better now, catches hold the vertical and horizontal arms together the spring loaded awning pulls the to into the van.
Might be a good idea to use something to restrain it when going on rough tracks.

Dunno about yours, but mine needs something to deflect things like tree branches so I don't have a repeat of the last one, which got destroyed. These things are not cheap.

    Spares are quite reasonable though.

Looking at my awning a couple of straps thru this bracket and around the arms would do the trick.
