Well done John - if you did ever have any dust reaching inside put a sock over the inlet.
A friend was showing me his new 18’ van that has a factory designed dust suppression system. I was thinking ‘that doesn’t look too hard to fit to my pop top of road camper’.
It’s basically a boat bilge air fan (4”) with a car air filter and a vent on the side of the van. It’s all located inside a cupboard next to the kitchen.
So I bought a Rule 4” bilge fan that’s rated at 300cfm.
The car filter that he is using would have required me to manufacture some sort of housing, which sounded too hard. So I phoned Donaldson and ordered a filter and housing with a 4” outlet and rated to minimum of 300cfm. Unfortunately that housing has a 4.5” inlet. Not sure what I was thinking but I really hadn’t expected such a big box to arrive.
Bring the over engineering person that I am, I figured that that means that I’ll also need a 4.5” air ram as I was after the most possible air to go through this system and I was not after a passive system that requires the fan to suck the air through the filter. It’s actually quite hard to find a 4.5” ram, but again, when it turned up I got a hell of a freight to see how big it is in person. 4.5” didn’t sound that big!
A few fittings later and I was ready to mount it all. I spent a few hours trying to find a good location and decided on the space behind the fridge. I had planned on using this spot for a pull out storage draw, but that physically the only spot it would fit. Many measurements, double checks, and moving the license plate resulted in a 5” hole in the back of the camper and the filter fitted perfectly.
Next thought: ‘how do I get a 4.5” river pipe without costing me the earth?’
My friend Adrian pointed out that stormwater is measured ID not OD, meaning that 100mm stormwater pipe being fairly well a perfect fit. A trip to the big green shed, a few failed tries, and a coat of textured black spray paint resulted in this -
But of course, then both spare tyre holders needed to be extended by 50mm, which was fine because it’s easier to clean behind them now. Also, in their original position I found that 1 tyre was rubbing on a mounting bolt…not ideal
As a result I took it on our recent camping trip. Covered nearly 2000km, with 1000km of dirt (Adelaide to Innamincka and home via Arkaroola/Gammon Ranges). Ended up with fairly well no dust in the camper. A small amount around the filter but that’s all. Really happy with the results.

There’s a little bit that’s leaked from where you unscrew the housing to remove the filter. It’s really not much and I don’t think that I can seal that.
Can you actually buy socks that big?
