    Haulmark 750kg PT1-1.2 - spare wheel carrier/relocating hand brake

I have a Haulmark PT1-1.2 and want to fit a spare wheel carrier.

My idea is relocate the handbrake forward about 250mm-300mm and fit a piece of steel between the A frame nearest the trailer wall to support the tyre weight, and fit an upright to the wall to hold the tyre in place.
Attached is pic of the idea. Green represents the upright. Blue represents the steel and red represents the intended handbrake position. "My thoughts are for the steel to be shaped to allow the tyre to hang down a bit lower than the bottom of the A-frame and also provide some protection to the tyre as well.

Any suggestions, gotcha's I should be mindful of?

    Haulmark 750kg PT1-1.2 - spare wheel carrier/relocating hand brake

Did something similar on a box trailer but just using a spare wheel carrier bracket which I bolted on. Added some angle steel and square tube for reinforcement.

And the added bonus is I can then strap into position an extra spare in front if needed using the trailer A frame.

Brother in law had some spare angle so we cut it and made a frame then welded it to the drawbar and welded some 3mm checker plate to the frame and front of the trailer wall to support the tyre's weight.
Welded more angle vertically and attached the pin from the spare tyre support bracket off the 130 HCPU. Stronger than the first idea to just use the bracket from the 130.

There are some gaps between the checker plate and the angle frame and the checker plate and the rhs on the trailer which I plan to seal with sealant and paint to stop water getting in which would eventually cause rust.
The checker plate will then effectively be a bathtub so I will need to drill a few holes to drain water.

Paint doesn't quite match (maybe because it is fresh) but will hardly notice it when it gets dirty. I'll give it a few more days to dry properly then post a pic or two with the spare fitted.

Need to add some thin ply or rubber near the bottom of vertical angle to prevent the tyre rubbing against the angle. And maybe a rubber or two on the top of the trailer wall.

And have to source longer hand brake cables and relocate the hand brake.

I've been trying to design something similar for our trailer, however without moving the handbrake or modifying the trailer.

Ideally having a bolt on clamp across the drawbar that can hold two tyres back to back, wither side of an upright.

It's the next project when I have a free weekend.

Would love to know how you get on with this.

I designed mine to accommodate up to a 255/85 tyre. I didn't think there'd be enough room for two spares and the handbrake aligned front to back but having said that, I didn't think of aligning the hand brake lever half under the checker plate. I did contemplate turning the handbrake lever 90 degrees but the cables are quite rigid making it difficult to position the handbrake lever.

    Another option, one either side?
This is not my trailer, just remember seeing the pic and thinking that's a good idea.

Oh Larry... you hit me in the sweet spot!

    That's a great idea.
I've built an internal slip in type camper setup for the trailer that holds all the gear, but cant be seen from outside the canvas.
That spot is where you access the water and diesel. Guess I could access from the front instead?

I'll look at it tomorrow and assess, but you may be onto a winner there. Thanks.

I thought about using the space forward of the wheel arches to hold jerry cans but opted not to as it restricts access to the trailer and tyres there would restrict access even more.
But I suppose it really depends upon how the trailer is loaded. eg: If large water tanks were installed at the front then tyres on the sides won't be much of an issue. Accessing the trailer from the sides is more important for me hence the tyre at the front. And I have the capability of carrying various tyre sizes which doesn't look possible with the side storage.
