My originating post was "Anyone know where I can get poly trailer guards that will take a 16" wheels / large tyres?" Thanks Echidna & Hotspur.
That aside welcome anyones real experiences. roverrescue thanks for your spec tips. Your trailer spec I generally already have save for 3rd wheel. Folding drawbar extension I have found works far better in the surf/gutters (something you don't get in nth qld) where launch and retrieve speed is the secret. Havin said that was in a position over Xmas where your 3rd wheel technique would have worked a treat. If you have a pic of a working 3rd wheel design would love to see it. Ones I have seen/used were rubbish.
Short tows (particularly uphill) in deep rutted sand (not long towing in hard bottom deep rutted say Cape roads) having a trailer track different to towing/other vehicles I find works better. Horses for courses as they say. In same vein trailer is bolted aluminium (welds would crack) being lighter and stronger for that weight.
Also more flexible which demands boat and trailer being snubbed up hard together as you suggest roverrescue.
Combined with that is also the outcome of bigger wheels sitting outboard of boat to keep boat not too high and therefore keep trailer launch/retrievel height in the surfline manageable........then as boat sits "between" not "over" guards and the increased potential for boat/trailer drive on damage from guards....
........well you can see my preference and reason my post being a search for large plastic guards to solve a boat retrieval issue (and unrelated to towing).
Cheers

If poly was not a goer could always use conveyor rubber?
Or the old bushie guard of cutting a tyre carcass up to size!
Will get some photos of my thrid wheel, its nothing flash, just a plate welded to a short stub axle, with a hub and bearings... when I need it I bolt on a wheel and disconnect from vehicle.
