Dotmar plastics Uniboard (marine ply alternative)

    Guys and gals,

I'm just looking at materials for the storage drawers and slide out kitchen unit I'll be putting together for my trailer.
I was just about to order some marine ply when I thought "I'll just see if there are any alternatives" because marine ply is quite heavy and I want to keep the weight down as much as possible.

    Came across this stuff.

    Uniboard,Recycled Plastic Sheet,Flat Sheet Panels,Timber Replacement Materials

Apparently it's much stronger and lighter than marine ply of the same thickness. It comes in 1220 X 2440 sheets and is around $242 for a 15mm thick sheet. Ok it's more expensive than marine ply of the same size/thickness but it's lighter, wont rot, is UV stable and I'm tipping it'd make a great benchtop chopping board for the kitchen unit.

    Thoughts?
    Cheers

    Mick

    Two points:
    1. Have you considered "form ply" used for concrete forming - much cheaper than marine ply.
    2. Make sure that any material used as a chopping board is "food safe".

would be interesting to see how you go. A mate of mine saw something similar at one of his mates Cabinet workshops that a rep had left as a sample. He was very taken by it assuming it is the same stuff

Thanks for the tip about this stuff

Have been researching for something suitable to make drawers as well. Was also looking at Qubelok system for the framework. The qubelok 25mm square tube section has an option of a 6mm lip, originally intended for inset glass panels in a DIY table top...

Seems to me that drawers fab'd from the Dotmar Ultrastiff panel may be smooth enough to slide on the aluminium lipped frame without the need for the complexity of rollers etc...

    The search continues
