A 4 way shoot out (or how the sheds on wheels have evolved)

Ok Im trying to line this up and have been for some time.

With just a little luck and good grace I will have 4 different breeds of sheds on wheels to put up on the hoists at work and take piccies of.

    1. scollps 07110
    2. my 03110
    3. brian helms 110 county
    4. my choice of perentine class 110's

Remebering that I wont be taking a spanner (or screwdriver) to any of them for the shoot It'll just be pics of anything I can get an eye on on a hoist or by opening the bonnets. (or anything else for that matter that opens by hand)

does anyone have anything in particular they want piccies of?

(this is just the anchor post and will be extensively edited once the pics are in).

If anyone has any reason to need them since I will be shooting in high res I'll dump the images to a cd or upload them to an ftpsite for later use.

for the benifit of the forum I'll thumbnail them back to 640*480 and they will all be hosted from photobucket in that resolution.

You seem to be missing a large chunk of years between brian's 110 and your 03.. I'd offer mine (94110 300tdi - but with auto conversion) however it's far from standard so I dunno how much use it would be.

ok today was a wash scollops forgot his drivers liscence and so couldnt get onto the base...

oh well back to my place for some improv pics and some light test driving and an acceleration comparison...

now remember that my opinion is biased on the "fixability" side of the business and that improvement on noise, on road handling and that kick ass aircon doesnt impress me enough to outway the fact that the alternator is again under the aircon pump nor the fact that handbrake has dropped below the chassis...

so from my perspective... Yep its a deefer, they changed enough on the chassis to squeeze their engine gearbox and tcase in and then deal with the exhaust coming out the right hand side of the engine (at least that cures the passanger side foot well heater problem).

just let me get all subtle for a minute...

If you happen to have an 07 deefer and you do the clutch, the alternator, the startermotor or anything under the dash Please dont come and see me take it back to the dealer.. The TD5 is bad enough to work on.

the engines tilted up to buggery and so's the transmission its sitting on what appears to be hydraulic engine mounts and the tilt by my rough gustimations if eliminated by lowering the engine back into the chassis should lift the handbrake back to where it should be.

The fan is not in proper alignemnt to the radiator on account of the tilt and has got a huge shroud on it to accomodate the engine being so far back

for a 4x4 The engine being so far back is a good thing on account of COG and stability the tilt isnt as with a redesign of the sump and mounts it could be dropped down incrasing stability fixing the alingment of the box to the diffs and letting a stock bonnet without the wanky powerbulge be fitted, how the hell are you supposed to put a spare up on that bonnet?....

Ok so thats enough of the bad...

    whats the mediocre...

well its a nice towing motor... but in our little experiment its not enough....

side by side to 60kph theres very negliable difference, our first run had big red trailing by about the distance from the bull bar to the center of the front wheel. the second run was a dead heat.. The 07's got it at the bottom of the range but just doesnt have the top end of the Td5. Couple the short (1500rpm or so) sweet spot of the new donk to the tighter ratio box and while the new rover gets away significantly better in first gear the td5 is hauling it back in while the 07 is changing out of first, then the 07 makes a bit of headway as the Td5 has to grab second theres a bit of a tussle at the same speed and then as both grab 3rd at near enough the same time the td5 is still on the boil and hauls it back when the 07 grabs fourth..

most everything else is same same....

    so heres the pics...

    an 07's clearance

    and a td5

    an 07 enginebay

    and a td5

the 07 turbo ac and alternator

can you say roasted alternater bearings?
    and in a td5

ok enough of the comparison pics how about some

    "what were they thinking" pics

Yes thats the airfliter box, Under the wing, and you thought getting to it at the back of the engine bay was annoying...and yes thats lines over the top of it and a not so flexable flex line that you need to tetris the lid out past after disconnecting the air inlet trunk and the sensor connector.

related to the intake, the exhaust...

Great now it runs about 4 inches from the front Uj,, can you say cooked grease and Tcase? and yes like the disco2 the aircon leaks onto the top of the box and potentially the front propshafts tcase side Uj... (wasnt today as we had it parked on an angle)

That thing buried up the top of the bell housing.. the Starter motor you have fun with that... (at least its not under the exhaust tho) and up higher than that buried at the back, clutch slave cylinder...

and since its always nice for the ego to finish on a good point

the good old td5 expansion tank on a new engine and yep with a hot engine its below the cold level.. at almost the exact same height tat mine sits at...

seperate accesable injector lines and the fuel system looks like someone with a bit of a brain has had a go at making it accessable, Which typically means that its not going to fail, Murphy says everything that is made hard to get to it will tho.

This is the civilised defender. Its the one you buy when you have to buy a utiltarian landrover that the wife needs to drive. the box is a good match to the engine and has a nice short easy gate, the clutch has a sort of over center assist so that once youve got it in and the pedals on the floor it takes less effort to hold it there.

It'll be interesting to do a proper job of assessing it.

The new engine is sitting back where they had the 200Tdi

When fitting the 300Tdi they moved the engine a long way forward by increasing the bellhousing length.
    This does two things.
    1. It's easier to work on.
    2. Weight further forward over the front axle gives increased traction for the front end hill climbing.
Not such a good thing in a race car (increased polar moment ) but a 'fender isn't a race car.

    Dave,
Good set of pic's. When I looked at an 07, I was actually so confused by the aircleaner position my mind kept telling me "that can't be it".

My understanding is they've also put the ECU for the engine on the firewall behind the back of the engine (visible in 2nd last shot). I would imagine that is going to get very hot, especially in summer or in central or northern Australia.

It was purely a case of parts rationality within the Ford empire (moot point, now) but imagine TD5 with a VNT turbo and the electronics upgraded to pass EECIV or V or whatever the new emission spec is.
Couldn't have been that hard, surely ?
