    Question V8 County Radiator in 110 TDi 300

    G'day All

    The ol fender is getting a bit hot under the collar with the Northern Tropical summer happening and the Air Con running most of the time.

    I've been thinking about getting a spare radiator and having it re cored or at least cleaned and sticking it in as I'm a firm believer that prevention is better than cure so doing it now with only 52,000k on the clock makes sense to me.

    The condition if the radiator is probably more about the passage of time than use too.

    So i was wondering about wacking a County V8 radiator in and moving the intercooler to the outside of the AirCon heat exchanger.

    Any one done this or seen it done?

    1 Will a v8 county radiator fit and if so how easy are they to acquire? Where would I start tooking for one?

    2 If I fit a V8 county radiator where do I fit the intercooler? It strikes me it would be a good opportunity to put a bigger one in. If so what type would I fit?

    3 What happens to the heat exchanger for the aircon? Is there room to put the intercooler in front of the heat exchanger for the aircon?

    4 What hoses do I fit?

    Firstly... Don't rely on your dash gauge for an accurate reading. Get a laser thermometer & get an independent reading. You may well find that everything is in fact OK.

    If you do want to go down the route of changing the rad... The easiest option is to get your one re-cored. The standard one is a 3 core but there is space to get a 5 core in there if you wanted (IIRC it's what was also fitted to early African spec vehicles).

    also if went a v8 one (i toyed with that idea at one point)... could grab an '07 bonnet (someone on here was making fibreglass ones) which should give heaps of room for an intercooler to attach to it

    Just something different - if your truck had been behaving itself this time last year, check your earth points at the chassis, and the earth strap near the starter motor. I had my temp gauge go from rock steady usual position to 2/3rds in a tunnel, in Sydney, and after I almost freaked (recent new head gasket) I found the head was normal able-to-touch temp, but the earth strap was a bit iffy. I replaced the LR issue with a 2ga copper line and cleaned the chassis earth points and everything is rock steady again.

    I like the sound of the 5 core , Anyone know who would do one around Townsville? Is it a common upgrade? Natrad might be worth checking out I spose.

    I had my Defender Rad recored by Red Devil a fortnight ago. The recore catalogue the guy was thumbing through had several different options of lengths, heights, # cores and tube size.

    PWR do a heavy duty 300Tdi one in aluminium at around the $700 mark to suit the 'fender, but I tend to like the repairability of a copper/brass one in the bush, although all new vehicles use aluminium these days.

    Bush65 had a 4 or 5 core one fitted to his Disco, IIRC.
