    Brake pad wear 2007+ MY

My rear brake pads have just been replaced after 40,000 km....(I'm not complaining).

This is for the first time in over two and a half years since new.

I am used to replacing the rears before the fronts...this was usual with the Disco but not as early. I always put it down to the crap thown up on dirt roads.

I am also aware of the balance between pad hardness and rotor wear....I'm talking about out of the factory setup.

    So I ask:

    1. What have others experienced with rear pad wear?
    2. What Mileage (Km) can be expected from the front pads?
    3. Why do the rears wear faster than the fronts if the front brakes do most of the work?

The rear pads are a lot smaller than the fronts which might go towards explaining why they often wear faster than the front.

Now, if you were to drive the car like you stole it & had a lot of weight transfer to the front all the time, you'll probably find the front brake pads wearing faster than the rears .

With all that engine braking courtesy of the compression I rarely have to use the brakes....I drove through Sydney without them in the Disco

Hi Mahn, My '08 110 went through 2 sets of rear pads and one set of front pads in 80,000k's. However I was replacing the rear pads when they got down to about 25% because they started squealing.

    Cheers,

    Tim

    Thanks Tim

I knew the pads were wearing because the fluid level had dropped in the reservoir..but no other symptoms...the dealer reckoned there was only another 3000 left in the rears. Very soon I will be taking more responsibilty for this aspect of ownership .

At least you were checking the reservoir! (or had the light come on? ). Strange yours didn't start squealing though....

Mahn, I overhead a conversation whilst in Goodyear the other day.

The manager there was saying that many cars go through the rears first. He was asked why by the customer, and answered with a shoulder shrug and replied all I can think of is the brake balance valving is wrong.

My old RRC was the same and from memory, and the inner rear pad always wore faster than the outer, so they were swapped on a regular basis.

My 2007 Puma 110. I don't think the factory pads are that good. I replaced rear pads at 83,000kms, when the inners were down to 3mm and outer at 5.5mm. I expected much more than this, as I do mostly long country trips and am easy on brake pads (sold a GU Patrol at 190,000 km with original pads at about 70%).

I replaced them with Bendix pads, and have 135,000 up now. The pads are fine, but I didn't measure them at the 131,000km service. I noted that wear was even all round & original front pads are still good.

Bendix Part number, if interested is OB1306/4WD
