I have changed my pads once in 6 years of ownership. I'm still carrying around a full set of pads I bought 2 years ago when I thought I would have to change them. I have done almost 200,000km in that time.
I had a new TDi 110 in 1998....rear pads were done and dusted after 4000km (yup, four thousand)...at 12:00 in Nowra NSW...which closes down for the rest of the weekend at lunchtime. Managed to grovel to brake parts supplier for a set of Oz made items (can't remember name) and they were going strong at 80k when I sold it.
I later had a new 2002 110 TD5 xtreme...rear pads were rooted after...yes you guessed it 4000kms....on a Saturday arvo in Nowra. Managed to get to Woollongong for a set of pads this time, fitting them in the car park.
On both occasions, LR 'dealer' said I had been driving in too much sand or mud. Asked him to shove his head under vehicle, before I did. I had probably covered 10% of the k's on well formed gravel, and shamefully, hadn't actually been 'off road' at all!!
The LR rear pads were all down to the metal, no bias for inner or outer pads either. It was really disappointing, especially the second occurrance.
Car companies design and build for average demographic usage. Land Rover owners are a particular breed that like to prove the capabilities of their vehicles. I hope that under BMW, Ford and now Tata, that products and specifications used in the assembly of usual domestic cars aren't applied lock stock and barrel to the Defender. Its is the best 4x4xFar.
