    Tyre Size for D3

    Hello All,

    My recently acquired D3 has the 18 inch wheels. I want to put M/T's or A/T's on it and I know with the limited choice of products and without having to buy a set of 17 inch wheels, what is the tallest I can go without affecting too much of the following:
    Wheel travel (i.e. under wheel arch guards)
    i know there will be a limit on size to speedo etc, so with this in mind and the D3 being an intelligent vehicle, can the tyre size be dialled into the brains of this thing to compensate for speed, engine revs, engine mapping when off road etc?
    Or do I have to settle for the standard size? Will I void any warranties by going taller....I'm not talking much taller, a few % (rolling diameter) maybe?
    When I put taller tyres under my TD5 Disco, the noticeable things were a loss of power, but not much, higher revs and increased fuel consumption (but speedo affected also, so not sure how much).

    Do some searching and you will pick up multiple threads on this issue. It has been done to death, and I think everyone is sick of rehashing the same arguments

    As Admiral said there is lots of discussion about 18 inch wheels and tyres on the forum, have search I am sure you will be absorbed for hours.

    But it would appear the most favored 18 inch AT tyres option in OEM sizes are;

    Pirrelli Scorpion ATR
    Continental Cross Contact A/T
    General Grabber A/T
    Yokohama A/T

    or at least these are the ones I recall.

    For those prepared to go away from OEM the options get quite technical depending on increases in rolling diameter, offset, legislation depending on where you are and preparedness to possible affect insurance claims.

    This does however brings in kit form Copper, BFG, Maxxis etc.

    Enjoy your search and if that is not enough there is more on the dico3.uk site but they spend a lot of time talking winter tyres which are not as relevant to OZ.

    I have a calibration option in my factory GPS but not sure exactly what it is calibrating. When I looked at it, it appeared as though it would adjust speedo and odometer for different sized tyres.

    If you modify the vehicle outside of permissable limits by your local roads authority then you risk voiding all insurances and having problems with the coppers. I think the limit in vic is a 50mm track increase and 15mm on diameter.

    In respect of your factory warranty, there are stories on here of owners being advised by their LR dealership they wont have cover for any part of the vehicle modified or changed to a non LR part or any damage caused to the vehicle by that modification or part. It seems in this area LR is rather tight, but otherwise is very quick to honor their warranty obligations on standard vehicles.

    Sorry to have brought it up again, but as a newbie to the D3 i'm frustrated at the lack of choices when coming off all my other vehicles the choice was endless. I've had Cooper A/T's the last 2 vehicles previous and BFG M/T's on 3 vehicles before those. looks like a compromise as always. Thanks for the links to the threads Trobbo. Cheers guys.

    I'm with you here Hedley - very frustrating after being spoilt with seemingly infinite choices on previous vehicles. Not only tyres, but readily available selection of steel rims - inexpensive and repairable.

    25mm track increase and 15mm dia. increase in Vic - at least until we adopt national regs. which allow 50mm dia increase.
