This might be better in the Discovery 1 section if its a 98.
I was thinking of putting Maxis Bighorn 285/75/16 on my 98 Disco petrol. Does anyone have an opinion on this as far as how difficult they are to fitt, and how it might perform?
This might be better in the Discovery 1 section if its a 98.

I can tell you they will scrub, my 245 only just clear it.
They are also a very high profile so you will need a camel cut on the guards plus a lift of 50mm I would say.
Your wear on steering box etc will go up and so will fuel consumption plus handling will take a dive with big wheels like that.
I had a big set like that and put themon only on trips away where I thought I needed them.
Tyre noise was also pretty bad, actually so bad from the mud tyres I ran that I could not talk on mobile on hands free.
Just my experience. 245/75/16 I found to be best compromise.![]()
I have 265/75 All Terrains on mine with just over 2 inches of lift. And they hit the front guard when going up a gutter on some lock.So you will have no chance of fitting 285's.It will also hit your radius arms. You will need flares for sure to fit them.
I agree with big guy and sprover. They wont fit without some heavy suspention work and maby even a body lift.
I run 245/75R16 on a 2" lift and they just clear my guards when 4X4ing.
It is suggested the 285's are just too big for a D1, biggest practical tyre is 265 and you will need to cut body for that.
If you want to go to the expense you can fit 37" under a DI with:
a 50/75mm spring lift, 50/75mm body lift, both sizes depending on the size of the other, 50/50 spring/bodyyou can fit 35"
flares (camel cut required),
-25mm offset rims,
4.11:1 to 4.75:1 CW&P to get back to the right rev range,
depending upon the individual car you may need either offset bushes in your radius arms or offset radius arms so you dont get death wobbles, some cars are fine with a 50mm lift others are awful.
upgrade your brakes to RR so you can still stop and extended brake lines,
then you may need to upgrade your axles to ashcroft etc depending on how hard you play.
You will also need to get it engineered as it will be illegal in all states of Oz without it.
I have been seriously looking at it and probably will but I will be aquiring the parts slowly then fit them all once I have the lot.
Just for interest on what is done in the UK, there is a chap with a D2 that attends all the shows as a trader, this D2 runs tyres that come to my shoulder, I am 6'1, they are TSL Super Swampers, for that it has about an 8in body lift, huge supension lift, different axles etc, all of it he has had to engineer himself, it must have cost a fortune, and yes it is road registered, it must drive like a boat!
Im running 265/75/16's aswell and they scrubbed until i cut the back of the rear gaurds and the back of the front gaurds. This is with a 2in lift and all good now. They are equivalent to 32's in rolling diameter. Im running 4.11 diff gears which bring it back to standard nearly (33's bring the gearing closer to standard with the 4.11's fitted in the diffs) but with standard diff gears in a disco running big tyres they run out of puff a bit on steep hills with the change in gearing they bring.
Im running the new Goodyear MTR's tyres with the kevlar in the sidewalls to increase puncture resistance. I can highly recommend them, they stick like **** to a blanked in mud and are wearing well on road aswell. They werent cheap at $390 a tyre but i reckon they are worth every cent.
