    Discovery 1 300tdi to 200tdi airbox conversion

After a week up the high country I am amazed how quickly the standard 300tdi flat panel filter clogs up.
I'm looking to change the air box setup to a round type as found on the 200tdi discos and most Defenders.
I also want to plumb it into a snorkel.
Has anyone done this or something similar? Any pictures would be good.

HI DiscoG,I have done this conversion, but I have a 96 D1 V8.Now I am not sure of the under bonnet air intake of the oilerbut on mine it wasnt a huge job.For memory I found some intake pipe at a place called Purple Pig for bout $20 odd per meter, welded the snout up and hooked it up.I would say it only took a few hours and half a dozHope these pics will help

DiscoG, here is a copy of the setup on my Disco V8, contrary to what others say, if you use the round canister don't plumb your snorkel into the side, first you will concerntrate the air and dirt onto a small 4" dia area of the filter which will clog up fairly quickly. plumb your snorkel into the end (like mine) and the filter will be working as it was designed to be and will last for ages, check here for another Thread on this subject http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...-filter-2.html , Regards Frank.

Kippa, here is a pic of the setup I had in my V8 Disco, these round filters are not designed to have the air coming into the side, they work much better with the air entering from the front, as designed, Regards Frank.

Yep that's the kind of thing I'm looking at doing.

    bbarkz how about those pics.?

Tank have you sealed the end of the filter cartridge? Otherwise wouldn't there be a line of sight directly through the middle of the filter into the intake?

Also I've found some Donaldson filter housings that would be suitable and line up with the snorkel outlet in the engine bay, bit pricey but apparently the double element design is the best form of filtration as used on trucks, heavy machinery etc.
Anyone done something similar? The Wolf Army Land Rovers in the UK used this set up.

A mate suggested doing the wrecker thing and finding a cylindrical or round Cruiser style one that fits and lines up. I'm more leaning to this idea as filters could be sourced at most auto outlets unlike the Donaldsons.
Has anyone seen or heard of a different vehicles air box that fits?

I use the cylindrical Land Rover air cleaner cans often on gas conversions. The element is retained by a plate and nut behind the spring-clipped lid, so no axial hole exists. Elements are easy and cheap to obtain via a few vendors on here I believe.

DiscoG, as you can see the filter sits in it's regular position inside the canister, held by a long threaded stud from the far end of the canister, there is a plate (see pic) which locates filter and seals the outer open end with a wing nut (or 7/16AF nut in my case. I cut the guts out of the original canister end plate (w/trumpet) and fitted a 100mm floor plate (PVC plumbing pipe) with a reducer to 90mm for the elbow (60 degree I think) Water Downpipe fitting, a bit of silicone a few self tappers a couple of $'s and job was done. This setup was transferred to my current 94 Disco 300TDi, the filters are only $15 and can be blown out with compressed air and last for at least a year off road, when I got this 94 it had a canister like mine but it was plumbed in the side. The filter is not deisgned to used this way and where the air came in the side the filter was clogged solid and likewise in 3 other Positions around the filter, the previous owner would rotate the filter when it became clogged. The middle of the filter was stuffed but the both ends were unused, waste of a good filter IMO, Regards Frank.
P.S. The lanrover canister is compact and filters are cheap, Donaldsons aren't cheap and the filters aren't either, I can buy my LR filter at my local Parts shop, no worries.

    DiscoG,

I've done this conversion to my 300tdi disco using a Defender housing, Southdown (UK) snorkel parts, Pirtek flex hose and some Supercheap silcone adaptors. I decided to go down this route because I wanted to add a snorkel but using the original air filter housing seem to make for a rather convoluted, inefficent path for the air flowing from snorkel head to turbo. The end result seems to work well, although I had to sacrific the windscreen washer tank - I plan to replace it with a relocated PVC tube version when time permits.

I actually thought of doing something similar to Frank regarding the intake to the air cleaner housing, but wasn't sure I could make it work - particularly sealing off the old intake so it was waterproof. He's done such a good job I might have another look at that though; as well as extending the filter life, it would improve the airflow too.

    Cheers
    Simon
