Engine Stutter From Take Off In Drive

Ok Guys I had trouble with my Disco V8 3.9 when I went to Melbourne on Friday got up there from Geelong did notice a little miss soft miss on the highway from the engine just thought it was cold got to Melbourne to my destination point A then drove to destination point B. Disco started to starter from take off at light's slowly getting worse and worse. Reached point B ordered my carpet for the other car asked if they knew of a Land Rover mechanic in the area was refered to a small Land Rover mechanic got there without stalling at the light's.

Mechanic looked at the disco and put it on the analyzer the distributor seemed to be at falt he found a second hand part and installed looked better on the analyzer and told me to take it for a spin it was much better no stutter at all.

Once I payed the price for the repair jumped back into the disco it wouldn't start straight away but did start after a few cranks but I was not happy so I got him to look again and he turned the distributor to the right a good bit and this got he disco started more quicker but still not as before.

Drove it out onto the road noticed a pinging noise from the engine and at light's a slight fast stutter the went quickly but nothing like before.

I want to know if maybe the mechanic used a distributor from an older disco or is there a problem elsewhere that caused the original distributor to fail or did he install it wrong or what.

Need to get this fixed as I am about to sell my Disco and I don't want this problem for me or the next owner and come back in my face a week after it's sold. I don't want to sell a car that has issue's.

Have a look at the rotor arm, had this type of problem with my old Disco. It refused to start at times other times it was fine. We finally found that the rotor was earthing to the distributer shaft. Have been told this is common on Discos. Hope this helps.

Was the rotor a genuine Lucas one??? I WILL NOT fit anything else as I jhave had a 100% failure rate with aftermarket rotors for these.

They are more expensive but not as much as a tow truck!!!

A crack in the top of the rotor near where the coil lead feeds into the roter . It just earthed directly to the shaft. Least point of resistance I suppose. Have never seen this before in many years working on and racing cars.

    do all the normal stuff,,
    check each lead by meter,
run it at night and look/listen for arcs,
try a different coil,(theres a few posts on this)

Checked for arcs none was found. I'm looking at either the distributor that was installed was also faulty or the coil or module is faulty.

I have ordered a new distributor from ebay in the UK tonight as I don't like using second hand parts anyway and will totaly rule out the distributor.

I wish I had one of you smart guys in Geelong to take a look for me.
