Stereos for D2...Advice and Show em :-)

    G'day All,

Ok...I miss good sound. In my D3 I had top of the range system, 13 speakers etc. Now I'm not expecting same in Smokey...but would like to know the following:

    • Will upgrade of speakers make a little or a lot of difference.
    • Been told a subwoofer would be good...anyone got one with the 7 seaters?
    • Can new head units be used with current steering wheel controls?
    • Typical brands suited for both head units and speakers. Rough spend? Currently mine has 6 speakers...including the 2 widdle ones on the A ? pillars.
So any advice, thoughts and better still......any pics of current setups. Thanks,

    Regards

    Stevo

Yours is a bit flasher than mine Steve. I haven't got the steering wheel controls in mine, so can't answer anything about compatibility with those.

The CD unit in mine started to play up - still working but jumping & skipping tracks even on bitumen roads. Could not find a replacement CD unit that was compatible with the Landrover head unit, so started looking around. At the time the young bloke was right into his doof doof music and had a competition stereo set up in his Honda Civic, so he had good contacts and gave me a couple of gift vouchers for birthday etc.

Ended up going with Sony Explod complete system. Amp is under the front passenger's seat, and sub is mounted where one of the storage boxes was in the rear (5 seater). All door speakers replaced with 7 inch Sony, but still using the original LR tweeters in the "A" pillars. Can put a single CD in the head unit, plus 10 disc stacker under the drivers seat. All installed by a local contractor in Kal who does most of the young blokes doof doof systems - very happy with his installation (glad I didn't try it myself).

Is a good system - I'm happy with the sound (and I'm another one who is fussy about good quality sound). Only regret now is that I got a model that does not have iPod connectibility.

    Cheers .........

Can you ask your installer how much for the sub enclosure only?

    Stereo's for D2

    G'day Stevo,

I recently installed a 2 din height multimedia unit in my 01 D2 TD5 that I bought off ebay. I got this unit because the display resolution was 800x480 as opposed to the 640x234 that almost all the other units being sold had... this makes a big difference when you are using eg. GPS screen.
I also went for the 2 din height as it had other functions such as DTV and DVD player that were not available on the single din motorised tilit display.
I also wanted it to fit neatly into the dash and make viewing a little easier being away from the glare.
Well.... little did I realise at the time, but the 2 din cavity where the original radio was mounted was in fact only 1.5 din
With a fair amount of anxiousness (carefully hacksawing parts of the dash away) and a reasonable amount of time ensuring that the unit was well braced I finally managed to get the system installed and I am pleased with the final result.... and it works very well.
Planning very soon to do a 2 month trip up through the centre, back down the west coast and across the Nullabor to Vic so it will get a good work out and I'll post the results of how it faired at a later time.
For anyone interested,I have attached a link to the ebay site along with a pic of the dash

No worries Tombie. I'll drop in there tomorrow morning and see if he is still around. He worked through the local Audiocom shop in Kal.

    Cheers ...... BM

Edit - he wasn't there this morning (Saturday). I'll see if I can chase him down during the week.
    Cheers .........

I changed all my speakers & that makes a huge difference..massive compared to the old crap ones. I didnt have the A pillar tweeters, so bought them from a wreck (i think $20 each) & the wiring was already there so just had to replace them with the blank ones. Added an Alpine iPod/USB changer (no CD which I didnt want anyway as all music is on iPod anyway) & a Rockford Fosgate sub & amp which I can disconnect very easily when I go away. I also didnt want the amp under the seat incase it got wet. Plus if I sell the car down the track, I can take the amp & sub easily to the next car. This was the most expensive part (about $1100 or 1200 but well worth it). Makes the mirrors vibrate!

There is a Alpine radio available that is ideal for the D2.
Land Rover Owners International had a article regarding this some time ago.
The radio can be programmed to work with the standard steering controls.
