Buying a D2 - what to look for?

My neighbour is selling his 1999 D2 after owning it for only 6 months and buying a Landcruiser.

My Dad's interested in selling his Toyota troop-carrier and buying it. The extra doors and seats would suit his purposes much better.

The D2 has about 140,000km on it, and he wants about $12K for it. It looks very well looked after, and has fairly regular service history with log books from both Austral and MR Auto. It looks like a good thing, but I have no idea what to look for and check on it.

I'm going to chat to MR Auto this week when I drop off my Defender or a service, and see what they can tell me about it.

So, the question is, what should I be checking on it?

    For a TD5:

    1. Oil penetrating the injector harness.
    2. Self Leveling Suspension air leaks.
    3. Warning lights staying on (3 amigo's or M&S lights) but make sure they all come on prior to start up.
    4. Wet carpets (passenger side from windscreen, both sides from blocked aircon drain) Due to poor design water can be directed off the windscreen into the passenger side air vent under the bonnet. This may not occur until you get the windscreen replaced.
    5. Worn or leaking shocks.
    6. Condition of radiator (check coolant and look for leaks). This is one area that may never give trouble if it has been looked after.
    7. Oil pump bolt. If not already done you should check it urgently as failure will result in a new motor. The sump needs to be removed to do this.
    8. Fuel regulator (leaks).
    9. Fuel line leaks around fuel tank.

All of the above issues will have been covered on this forum. For more info on these issues try the search function.

    Cheers
    Martin
