The cam sensor tells the ECU which cylinder the engine is on. If it dies the engine will not start but will run if it starts.

Problem with our V8 Discovery 2.
If I drive it even just for 10 minutes and stop, then restart within about 5 minutes it starts OK. But longer than that and there is no ignition, it turns over great but no spark (RAC mechanic called and checked it out).
I have to leave it for about 1/2 an hour and it will start again no problems.
It does not cut out, missfire or die once it is running. To me it sounds like an imobiliser problem, but I am probably totally wrong.
It does of course have the three amigo's issue but that has been there for ages so is unrelated.
Can anyone point me in the right direction.

Phil,
I went through a rotten time a while back where my car (V8) played up starting and then just died and would not fire. here is the list i went through,
Computer, cam sensor, crank sensor, ignition packs, fuel pump, when hooked up to the diagnostics computer everything was checking out .Last thing done........ fuse box and vroooom. $630 for a new fuse box. I didnt have to purchase the above list working through the problem which was good.
Hope there is an easy solution.
I would look at the crank angle sensor, I had trouble with mine a while back, car would not retart, RACV said it had no spark, car was towed to LR mechanic he diagnosed same problem, no spark. When the mechanic came and tested it the next day there was no problem, he tried everything to fault it eg. applied heat to sensor and the car would not fail. I agreed to change sensor as a precaution ( I didn't want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere) and I haven't had any trouble since.
Agree with the crank angle sensor. Had the same issue on the xtrail, hot start within 5 ok, longer no go until cooled. 1 month out of wty, yelled a bit and was covered.
Yes I can Phil,,,

Hi Phil_Wynter, we had a similar problem with our 1999 Discovery II V8 manual. It would spin over with the starter motor but wouldn’t fire. This would occur every cold morning, but after connecting the Hawkeye hand held diagnostic scan tool and clearing the fault codes it would start. The engine ran very well with no misfiring and dying symptoms. However, on a warm day, the Discovery would start at once with no problems, but on a cold and wet day the problem reoccurred. Eventually, the problem worsened so that every time we stopped the car we had to restart it by clearing fault codes! The main faults included:
ABS 4114 Shuttle Valve Switch Failure
Fault 236 P0600 CAN Timeout EGS/Auto Transmission CM Signal Missing
Fault 148 P1668 Anti-Theft Alarm System BCU/BeCM Serial Link Immobiliser Signal-CAN Data Bus
Then, not so long ago, we bogged the Discovery and made the Traction Control work hard. The three amigos arrived and left us stranded as we had only drive to one front wheel. We towed the Discovery out, and much to our surprise found the starting problem had disappeared! We have had the three amigos intermittently since we had the car, which suggests that the problem is related to the ABS shuttle valve system.
