Thread: How do I get my wheel nut covers off??!!

Is it just the security wheel nut covers you're trying to take off?

The security wheel nuts have a cover that you use a plastic tool to get off (should be with the wheel brace kit somewhere). The other four nuts don't have covers (that come off). You can tell the difference by looking at the inward or outward dimple on the nuts. From memory the outward one is the security nut with the cap.

I've got rid of all of my security wheel nuts because of problems with getting them off with the key tool. I replaced them with just standard ones.

The D2 wheel nut covers don't come off except for the security wheel nut of which there is only one per wheel.

If you have managed to get the chrome caps off you have just stuffed up. You wouldn't be the first. ($12 each for a new wheel nut - new)

M8, I did the same - what a dick I felt! Yes, just the security one comes off on each wheel. The other covers stay on the nuts and invaribly get a bit nurgled as they are taken off/done up.

yes I'm guilty of the same thing, sat for about 20 min trying to work out how they came off.

Only 20 mins!!!!!!
My unit unfortunately didn't come with a wheel brace in the tool kit (thankyou mr dealer man for not sending it as you said you would) so I didn't even have that to refer to when removing a wheel on a Disco for the first time!
3 days later upon signing up to these forums, I asked the Dickie question & now here we are 😁

but... you guys (and gals perhaps) seem reasonable, write legibly and are... dare I say it, nice even. Surely this can't be so, or... I have stumbled upon something... unusual.

Thanks for the responses, I checked this from work after "datt" replied and I thought "oh ****... I bet I'm trying to pull the cover of a single piece wheel nut". Thing is though they are strange wheel nuts! I have never come across any that seem to move (like they are a cover). Anyway I got all the nuts off, and the plastic wheel nut cover... but now I am down to the stupid bloody 'lock nut' that I am strongly considering replacing for a normal nut. Half of the dimple on one of the sides of it has perished so I can't get the damn lock nut remover thingy that fits onto the brace to bloody stay on while I am trying to undo it! It keeps slipping off as I turn with any force.

I'm thinking I'll find an old socket and smash it over the lock nut with a hammer then undo it using a socket wrench and replace the thing. Unless anyone has any better ideas?

Do exactly that.

The lock nut adaptor generally splits and you do not need that out in the bush (or Coles) its bad enough on your driveway.

A lot of folk replace the lock nut with a std nut on each wheel.

Also, do not use the spare wheel nuts as road wheel nuts, they are not to be interchanged. (says so in the Bible (RAVE))
