    D2 door won't close

I'm keen to hear if anyone else has dealt with a problem such as I've got at the moment with my MY99 D2.

    In summary:

    * front passenger side door was unlocked recently and someone pulled the exterior handle to get in

    * the door would not open. No amount of combinations of dash switch, key fob, interior/exterior handles being used worked. It's as if both handles are not meeting any resistance as you pull on them to open the door.

    * I removed the door trim (distinctly easier when the door is open as the screws on the door trim are blocked by the seat being in the way. And the seat mounting bolts are inaccessible due to the seat base trim being on...still, not insurmountable, just a PITA. Bits of trim all over the covenient bench that is the roof of my wife's car...must remember to move them before she goes to work tomorrow!

    * the interior handle was tried at some point after the cables and actuating rods inside the door were checked and appeared fine, and the door opened normally.

    * somewhere in my "testing" of the actuator, still in situ, something has happened and the striker/catch component of the actuator (as per photo) will now not permit the door to be closed.

The green arrow shows the path that the striker needs to take - essentially a downward arc. When the opening of the striker (in red) is in the 'C' position (opening to the right as seen in the photo) all will be fine and I'll be able to close the door.

I've tried to pull the striker back downward by gripping it with pliers and pulling back toward me. You'll also see there are a couple of indentations on the inside of the circle from where a hammer and screwdriver were used to add some 'persuasion' to get it to return to where it should be. I thought I was being moderately persuasive but still no joy.

Superlock is not enabled and the other doors all open and close fine.

I know I'm up for a new actuator but is there anything someone else can suggest I try - I need the vehicle to be drivable by Tuesday...

Thanks in advance for any input.

The locking clasp is in the locked position, the only way you are going to get the door closed is to get it unlocked
If you do get it unlocked and the door closed, you are going to have the same problem trying to open it

If it is essential you use the car before you can get a replacement fitted, you could remove the lock and inspect it and give it a good clean, in the hope of freeing it for the time being

    Thanks for your reply.

If the fob, dash locking button and the internal handle don't seem to be unlocking it I wonder if there's some other method that will be possible when I remove it from the vehicle?

I also tried disconnecting the plug that powers the actuator - no change.

I think that I'll remove it tonight and bodge up some means of tying the door closed so that I can drive it to work and wait for the replacement actuator to arrive.

Any other thoughts on what else might have happened here most welcome though.

    Thanks.

    Red = superlock
Green = inner door handle ( and outer links )
Blue = door locking tab (including one way mechanism)

The outer plastic cover comes off with some gentle persuasion by hand

The superlock (RED) moves a striker so that everything misses and doesn't open, you can rotate it on the pivot point by hand.

Pull the inner handle cable (GREEN) this should hit the superlock striker and unlock then first pull, then open the latch second pull.

On the outer door handle has an adjusting rod which can be adjusted too short meaning it wont open the door when the outer handle is fully extended, you can unclip this rod and extend it.

Sorry for the rushed reply, its easter.

    Cheers

Well done that man. Yer a bloomin legend Marc.

Seriously, thanks for that mate, I'm inspired to give it a go now having seen your explanation. I have ordered a replacement through landyparts.com.au so you'll definitely be able to grab this one and have a play.

I may well get the striker mechanism free but I doubt I'll put it back into the door in case it jams closed when the door is shut.

Enjoy the rest of your day.

After removing the vehicle-side striker/catch thingamyjig (the bit that the lock hooks onto which is bolted to the vehicle with 2 allen bolts, I was able to use a tie-down cam lock strap to keep the door closed for my run to work.

I returned home and fitted a new actuator. All relatively easy when you raise the door frame high enough. If you don't raise the frame high enough it is very difficult to get the new actuator up behind the rail that the window glass slides down.

So, all good. Bolts torqued up, door striker thing as above re-fitted to vehicle. I close the door. Hmm, shuts with a nice satisfying 'clunk' doesn't it?

    I try the handle.

    No.
    No, no, no, no.

[puts down socket, walks away from the vehicle],

    NOOOOOOOO!

    Copulator!!!

    No result.

Exterior handle still won't open the door, BUT! the interior handle now works when it didn't earlier.

I attached a video of the action that is happening on the inside of the door handle when it's being 'opened' at this thread here. Please have a look at it and if you know what might be going wrong at this end of the equation I'd be grateful for your thoughts.

    Thanks.
