Transfer case ????
Hi Guys,
For a while I've had an oil leak coming from the top area of the transfer case. About 3 weeks ago the transfer case oil level checked, only down about 2mm, but the oil was changed anyway. The oil used was Penrite Transaxle 75.
The next day I started getting a terrible thump/crunch from the transmission/transfer case.
It happens when decellerating and coming to a stop also when slowing down to about 40km/h and then applying some accelerator to drive off. If I leave the auto in 3rd gear it doesn't happen but you can still feel some small thumps as the gear box changes back.
The up changes also aren't as smooth as they were before.
Also about a week before the oil change I fitted a Rovercraft recon front drive shaft but this problem only started after the oil change
Is this a transfer case problem or could it be something in the auto box?
All replies appreciated.
Thanks

Doesn't sound good. One other thing to check (and check quickly) is the front driveshaft unis. I was getting some of those symptoms just before I discovered my dodgy driveshaft had lost two bearings on a uni joint. In fact, I was convinced that my auto was shot, as it gave a little thump when taking off, as if one of the clutches was giving way. Soon after started getting grinding noises.

I've looked at the front prop shaft already but I'll get underneath again tomorrow and check it again.
Thanks

Sorry for not following up on this.
The end result was this;
1/ The front diff centre assembly replaced
2/ The rear diff hemisphere assembly and carrier bearings replaced
3/ Transfer case removed for overhaul, intermediate shaft replaced
Apparently the bad clunking was coming from the front diff but the rear diff was not good as well and the transfer box too.
I also had the rocker cover gasket replaced and Auto trans fluid replaced
All up the total cost was...Parts $1085.00. Labour $1960. Total $3045.00
I've since done around 10K since it's been done...clunking was cured but now I've got vibrations thru the car at 100k/h and it feels like it's coming from the driveline somewhere and the transfer case is leaking again.
