    Wombat hole vs td5 auto

Attachment 16441Droped the beast into a puddle. The winch would not work under water so Highlift and chain to the rear. Attachment 16443. The winch bitch was happy. When we got it out (2 hours) cheaked air box and fired up. nothing over 2000rpm and auto in limp mode Attachment 16444 might have water in its ECM. Motor made a metlic bang and cut out. Got the disco home, well, floor mats out and hose out floor ect.PICT1053.jpg. Auto ECM has mud in it, hosed out. Checked diff levels, no hight change so change can wait. The motor, pulled hoses before and after turbo, looks OK. Oil at EGR valve (from inlet manifold??), took rocker cover off, TIMING CHAIN broken!!. Motor still turns. So what do you think, valves hit pistons? , Guess head off next. What about the auto? Appreciate your thoughts, thanks in advance Kyle.

Did the motor run for long? was it noisy? Bent valve may have locked the cam enough to break the chain. If you can, try and turn the cam shaft either way, do not use force if it appears to tight. I cant remember if the valves open enough to hit the pistons.

Just an update. Coolant level realy low. Dipstic level up by 80mm. One guess where it went. Cam shaft does turn, I've only moved it 20mm either way. Look at it deeper after my week away. The wife said we can't do Nihll to Pinaro on the border tk. in her Suzuki swift (it's all about momentum is'n it ),So a week on tarmac.

    Hi Alien
The same thing happened to my mate on the weekend at LCMP (see QLD trip reports for pics). It is a TDi so we did get it going again, but his interior is also stuffed. Best of luck trying to get it going again, and getting the interior sorted. What is the state of your engine ECU, those things hate water, just ask stig0000
You might have already done this, but change all the fluids, water gets in everywhere.
    Cheers

Thanks Hendrick, I've washed all carpets out, gee there was a lot of silt in them! They are drying out, backing foam about 20mm and still damp. Hosed and wiped floor. ECU under bonnet stayed dry, can't say same for auto ECU, washed it out but can't see contact side. Waiting for the mud to dry out of the plug on harness side so it can be done too(must look to see if there is a spray for electrical contacts ect.) Cheaked the diffs, no obvious sigs of contamination or raise in levels (I'll change when she's going again). Don't want to think about the winch. Cheers.

Forget the bloody carpets. Yes the valves will strike the piston if the CAM chain breaks. From here on it depends if valve stems are bent and whether your head is bent. Seek professional help now.

I have changed a head gasket and it is not hard if you follow the RAVE but to have broken the timing chain is ugly.
