I presume the noise is only when moving. Brake Pads ? - if new are they fitted with the chamfer (if present) on leading edge?
Greetings,
I hope someone might have an answer to this mystery noise.
My 01 D2 TD5 manual is making a strange squeaking/squealing noise once up to operating temp. The noise is there whether in gear or neutral and only stops when the brakes are applied.
It is not like sqealing brakes under braking more like the sound similar to the chirping you get when your uni joints are on the way out but with no associated vibration. All uni joints have been replaced with greasable ones.
The brake guards were removed as they were cracked over a year ago and the front drivers hub has recently been replaced and the noise does not change with speed variation.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

I'm thinking brake pads as well, maybe something is caught in one of them?
Does the noise come from any particular area?
ide be thinking more along the lines of broken exhaust manifold studs.
cheers phil
So what you are saying is:My 01 D2 TD5 manual is making a strange squeaking/squealing noise once up to operating temp. The noise is there whether in gear or neutral and only stops when the brakes are applied.
The noise is happening regardless of vehicle motion, but ceases when brakes applied?
If this is the case I would be looking at the vacuum lines from booster and alternator.
Otherwise I'm with the others on brakes.
Cheers
had a noise on a mates 99 td5 last weekend turned out to be the unit that operates the egr valve, similar to what you describe. We blocked off the vacuum line at the tee on the vacuum line that goes to the brake booster problem solved. This also disabled the egr valve.
hope this helps
cheers Ecka.
Phil, it is easy to brake while you still have your foot on the go pedal, provided that you have two feet!!
Having said that, I tend to agree with your diagnosis. In my experience the noise will be loudest under hard acceleration if it is an exhaust stud.
