Start with the filters etc that Dave suggested. Tappet clearances are critical for performance and fuel economy. Every 10k they need a look at. BUT, towing a trailer with a Tdi over 90km/h will make them suck it up. 
Basically, the 265/75's push the engine a bit, the trailer a bit more, and then at higher speeds it all falls over and starts using fuel
