    why is my disco thirst

    well the heat has gone and the disco got thirsty its a 96 300tdi auto with 130ks i put a et of 265/76/16s on a few weeks ago and it didnt seem to change mileage, but ive been towing a trailer for work its a 7x4 with my work gear and wighs aprox 600kg, and ive done 380ks and im down beetween 1/2 and 1/4 i normally do 300ks in hte first quater but it seemed to be thirsty before i was towin the trailer everyday, should i get a tune up can you get them tuned

    assuming that the weather is the same, the fuel is the same and you havent changed your driving style.....

    yep they are tunable pump timing injection quantity, aneroid control and wastegates are all changeable.

    but I wouldnt be starting there.

    Id clean the air filter, sort the valve clearances, check the timing, check that nothings gone wrong with the exhaust or the turbo.

    once thats done then its time for more advanced diagnostics.


    If someone messed with the pump to turn the heat down (as in your pyro was winding its nipples off when you had the power on and you were blowing plenty of smoke) then they may have botched the job, take it back and ask them to go again.

    hasnt had anyone touch it nothing has been adjusted, threw a fan belt last wekk but it was using it before that, who is someone good in newcastle to take it to to get everything checked over what will i be looking at

    so by temperature change you mean as in ambient temperature?....

    How far did you go after you chucked the belt?

    I have a sneaky feeling you might be down on compression now due to some overheating that might have upset something.

    Start with the filters etc that Dave suggested. Tappet clearances are critical for performance and fuel economy. Every 10k they need a look at. BUT, towing a trailer with a Tdi over 90km/h will make them suck it up.
    Basically, the 265/75's push the engine a bit, the trailer a bit more, and then at higher speeds it all falls over and starts using fuel

    drove maybe 20m she didnt get any hotter
    can any mechanic do a compression test

    my trip to and from work each day is about a 80km round trip bout 30km of over 60 and hilly, ut surely it couldent drink that much more or could it, im giving it anather service on the weekend but wouldent mind taking it somewhere who knows there stuff and getting compression, clearnace's ect checked over

    any mechanic that does diesels should be able to do a compression test, IVe seen more than one compression gauge killed by someone hooking it up to a diesel when it was ment for a petrol.


    That distance without a fanbelt shouldnt have caused any additional problems and once the tappet clearance, air filter, injector patterning (that needs a diesel specialist) and fuel quality have been assessed its down to environmental factors like

    load, tyre size, head wind and rolling resistance.

    Just assuming that the tyres you fitted are bigger diametere than what you had before...... Your odometer will be out by the same amount your speedo is..maybe 10%. When I fited the 235/85/16's to my D2 I was horrified till I adjusted my thinking...and calculations

    I agree with Wardy1. JB, you cannot tell me you changed tyres to 265/76/16s (from Std) and did not notice any difference! Simply changing to 245/75/R16 from standard D2 issue made a 5% difference on my vehicle. I suggest you firstly ascertain your % error and as Wardy1 suggested - recalculate.
