An offer was made to me

    Hello,
I was looking around farms and what-not for land rovers and found a series 3 LWB hard top in reasonable condition with diesel engine, that was pretty oily, and there was a bit of back panel damage. The guy said that it used to belong to his father and would like to sell it to someone with all his extras. "Extras, you say?"
It turns out that there was 2 extra diesel engines (+the one in there already), gearbox, another petrol engine 2.25l and 2 salisbury axels/diffs.

    He's asking $1000.

I was warned off series 3 and diesels in particular but this seems a pretty good deal. I've been reading that the diesels can be made into excellent engines with little modification.

    Is it a go-er?

I'll bring the shovel, lime and capsicum capsules as well....

avoid shooting if you can, 60ftlb of torque on the neck makes an "accidental" death by falling easier to fake.

...you guys sound like you've done this before.
Here's some pics, and yes, that is what his farm looks like:

    I think it is 91917kms.

I have recently bought a 2a ex-army 3/4ton GS and it seems to be a lot heavier duty and the s3 and I have a mate that says don't get a series3.
I'm sure you guys love them... Do you? especially compared to a 2a?

the biggest difference is in the box.

the 2a box is tougher but unsyncro'd in the first 2 gears.

a decent condition drum to drum sals can get you $500 and a "runs, sort of" diesel is worth about the same. (If you can find someone stupid enough to want one )

    Blknight,
You obviously like the diesel. Do you run it just as standard or have you done stuff to it to get it how you like it?

What is wrong with Series IIIs?
I bought mine when it was 10 years old and sold it when it was 33 years old. By then it had over 300,000km on it and it didn't ever let me down in that time.
The gearbox may not be as strong as a 2A, but it is plenty strong enough to do the job. Apart from the fact that it used to like to jump out of third gear, mine gave me no problems.

Just because some bits were not as good as the 2A doesn't make the whole vehicle inferior. After all my Salisbury diff was better than the one in the 2A.
