2.25L 8:1 for rebuild, what to pay?

    Hey all

Im trying to source a 2.25L Petrol engine to rebuild as a swap when mine gives up the ghost.

Ive found one locally with most ancillaries except alternator and starter motor - condition unknown.
    They want $100.

What do you all think is a fair price?
Anyone else in the northern tablelands area of NSW got a motor they want to sell?

    Cheers

eyeball down the carby/inlet manifold if its not full of dust rust or water marks thats a good start put a strong bar on the crank and remove the breather cap from the rocker cover. If you can bar it over and you can see the rockers in that hole move whip off the rocker cover. If the rockers arent rusted you're in good shape for a rebuild and its probabley worth the $100. if you want to invesitgate further stand the engine vertically and turn the engine so the timing marks at TDC then fill pots 2+3 with oil and see if it leaks away if it dissapears into the sump quickly a pistons shot. roll the crank 180 and go again on 1+4.

if all that passes muster then odds are that if you stuck it in a frame and bolted up a starter and added a battery, fresh oil, some fuel it would probabley start.

theres more checks you need to do depending on how much you're willing to spend on the rebuild.

In most places you could probably get one for a carton of beer.

As dave says, make sure it will turn over. If you can, also pull the head off and check the size of the pistons. They go up to 0.080", so as long as it hasn't been bored to more than 0.040" then you should be right, no matter how flogged out the bores are. (you can get liners, but it will save you $ if you don't have to).
