Exclamation 88" Can I borrow your rear seats? (also: military LR, 110/County/SIII/Stage 1 wagon)

    Hi,

Hebe is ready for re-registration. That process has been a bit of a nightmare so far.

1st) I was a few minutes late... sorry go make a new appointment.
2nd) Next appointment the process was almost ready when it didn't print out the registration card. Reason, Vic Roads system for the whole of the state crashed. Come back later.... I still need to go back...

In addition, the previous registration had it as a 3 seater and incorrectly listed it as 1957 instead of 1958 and the vehicle inspector didn't want to change anything.

    HELP
Do You Have your 88" Registered as a 7 Seater!? You can help me!

Due to the computer crash I have to come back and was luckily put in touch with the supervisor. He said:

In order to change it I would need an engineers report. Which I was adviced would be unlikely to be given for the benches in the back without the seat belts.

Or... if I could show that other people with the same model had it registered for 7 seats they could consider (no promises) to change it from 3 to 7 seats.

If you have yours registered as a 7 seater (in VIC or other states), could you send me an email or text message with your license plate number? Or call me... hebe.land.rover@gmail.com / 043-0509258 (Kris). Even if you have a 80"or 86" let me know.

Can anyone in/near Melbourne borrow me the back seats/benches for my 88" Series 1 (1958), one day only?

I think that if I show up with these at registration it would help as well. Unfortunately I don't have any myself. I would need to borrow them for only one day. Anyone?

(The side benches/seats directly above the wheel wells.)

    Email or text/call me... hebe.land.rover@gmail.com / 043-0509258 (Kris).

As to changing the year from 1957 to 1958... The supervisor was OK with accepting the details from the original workshop book I have. I guess he was extra friendly seen the computer crash etc. Otherwise I may have needed a letter from Land Rover.

If you can't help... maybe you know someone who can!?

Anyway, thanks again guys.... Hope I can return the favour one day...

    Kris on behalf of Hebe

The rear seats from anything should fit your 1958 even seats from a military LR, a 110/County or SIII/Stage 1 wagon only the 12 seat wagon and 80" seats are different. (Although there is a difference in the backrest brackets between S1 and the later models.)

Your 1958 was pre ADR so seat belts are not required in the rear, however if fitted they are required to meet A/NZ Standards

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

    Thanks Diana,

Luckily they didn't mention the seat belts and were going to pass hebe as is (3 seats front) without them.

I guess that if I would need a new engineers report on the rear seats that would take into consideration current safety requirements. If I went that route I wondered what would happen, the engineers requiring seat belts for the back but ignoring the front as that was not the issue!? It's crazy. If they want real safety they should insist on everyone getting seat belts. If they want to allow originality they shouldn't be so beaurocraticly difficult.

?? Anyone in Australia got their 88", 86"or 80" for that matter registered on the road as a 7 seater?? If you don't want to share your license plate number with me (private or on this forum) than at least let me know if you got the 7 seat registration and in which state.

So far no one replied, isn't there anyone who's got it registered as a 7 seater?

Well, if anyone in/near Melbourne can give me the use of their back benches for one day, would be appreciated.

    Anyway, thanks guys.

Can I borrow your rear seats for one day?

I am looking for the side benches/seats directly above the wheel wells.

I need to borrow them for one day only in order to get my car registered for 7 seats. Have a look at the original thread and the first post at:

Best to reply on that thread. My contact details are there.

    Thanks for looking.

Defender ones wont fit as a straight swap. The wheel box to body capping height is different, and will require you to make brackets.

    Hi,

Thanks,... please best to respond on original thread.

Anyway, it would be for one day only. They wouldn't test the seats etc. They would just want to see them there. If I just have them in the back with some temporary bracing I think it would be fine. They know I am going to do a paint job next and I can just say they were temporarily removed and put back.

So if you can help out!?

    Or Buy?

This got me thinking... I want to get seats in the back anyway. Originaly I thought to get a welder to help me. (new to Australia and have not many tools, also living in small appartment in city centre)

So, why not buying them. I see that there are some reproductions on sale in the UK. Even on Ebay (although those don't list Series 1 specifically)

    See links:
Land Rover Series 1 Bench Seats
Land Rover Series 2 and 3 Load Area Seats
LAND ROVER 90/110 & SERIES 3 TWO MAN BLACK BENCH SEAT on eBay (end time 26-Oct-09 16:09:12 GMT)
Land Rover Defender / Series 2A 3 2 Man Bench Seat on eBay (end time 13-Oct-09 14:51:04 BST)
LAND ROVER SERIES 2/2A/3 SWB "TECHNO" REAR BENCH SEAT on eBay (end time 13-Oct-09 17:17:09 BST)
LAND ROVER SERIES 2/3 SWB BLACK VINYL REAR BENCH SEAT on eBay (end time 20-Oct-09 17:04:38 BST)
LAND ROVER SERIES ELEPHANT HYDE BENCH SEATS SEE LIST on eBay (end time 09-Oct-09 11:40:48 BST)

However, can't google or Ebay anyone in Australia with rear seats/benches for sale?

And which ones to go for?

Does anyone do reproductions here in Australia?

If I have to get them shipped from the UK it would take too long. My RWC is only another two weeks so I need to do the registration soon. Anyone can give me the use of their back benches for one day, would still be appreciated and extremely helpful.

    Thanks

If you're not going to use it as a 7 seater, why bother going through the grief?
Just get it registered as a 3 seater?

If you register it as a 7 seater, and don't have the rear seats in it, everytime you drive it, you can be pinged, and insurance won't cover you - even if someone else is at fault or hits you.

    Hi,

I guess the last two posts were posted at around the same time.

Oh, I do want to use it as a 7 seater.

I just didn't think they would have liked to see the actual benches in the back at re-registration. Should have though of that earlier. To me the wheel arches are the benches themselves. Who needs cushions and pillows!? I wanted to take care of getting comfortable benches after the paint job.

What do you mean with pinged? I am Dutch and not familiar with that term when it comes to traffic/driving.

And would insurance not cover me if there is no one seated in the back? I guess the seats/benches would possibly be a requirement if someone is seated there. However, there are plenty of cars and vans which allow removal or collaps of the rear seats/benches. I don't think that is a problem when there is no one seated in the back. And would insurance cover anyway... seen there are no seatbelts?

Of course, no one dares to hit a 1958 Land Rover, and I don't plan on crashing it myself... so no insurance needed....
