Went 4x4ing and got myself bogged. No problems, there are plenty of trees to winch myself out. Wrong. Winch wouldn't work.
So when I get home I pulled it off and dismantled it. This is what I found.
Luckily this looks worse than it really was. It all cleaned up ok. The problem was the bearing on the end of the motor was seized.
This poses a question. How do you prevent this? The only solution I can see is to dismantle winch about every two years to clean and re grease.
As a by the way, for those that have not seen inside a warn XD9000(until now this included me) you will be amazed that the motor is connected to the gearbox by a piece of 8mm hex shaft that runs through the centre of the cable drum.
Dave.

Some people pressurise the which to stop water getting in. I don't belive that you can get around regular maintenance and once every two years might not be regular enough if you are doing a bit of wading through muddy water.
You could try sealing the motor with silastic when you reassemble it, and pack the gear with heavy grease.

Dont pack the gearing with grease, it will only cut a parth through the grease then they wount have any lubrication at all.
The only grease I would use is Penright semi fluid grease with Moreys oil addative in a ratio of about 50/50. Both these products are ideal for winches .
