General Grabber V Cooper ATR

 All,

We get our car later this week, and it has General Grabber's on it. What do we think of these tyres? We are going to the simpson in June, and I'm worried that they will be destroyed by the terrain.

I thought of getting something like the cooper ATR or bfgoodrich all terraing. Would these really be any better than what I have?

Also, has anyone had any experience trying to trade new tyres? I'll ring today and see what they offer.

Thanks!

<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>Real men and women drive English cars
Should read "Real men and women who want to get wet, break down and are pretty light on in the head drive English cars" This may be why I love Land Rovers, MGs and Minis. Oh for a nice MG convertible, just got to get rid of the kids first.
Can not say I have even heard of General Grabbers, LR for a while ran Michelins which were OK but overpriced to replace, Goodyear Wranglers for a while which are also OK. Generally they only put half decent highway tyres on as standard as they handle nicely on road for demos, normally get a good deal to fit them which is a shame, it would be ideal if they brought them in without tyres and you could have put on what you wish instead of wasting a set of tyres. A good idea is if you have a trailer or camper have them fitted to same size wheels as your vehicle and the stud pattern on your trailer changed to match your vehicle. Gives you plenty of spares for remote trips.
In the past I could not go past BFG in AT and MT. Have run them on Disco, RR and Defender. The AT's make a good compromise tyre. Currently on my Defender I am running Cooper STTs, great in the mud, noticeable on the sand (do not float as well as AT's, expected, and a little noisier on road. Too early too tell yet on overall performance and durability.

From what I've seen the General Grabber is a light truck tyre with a road tyre profile. If you want something that will give you a bit more bite in the scrub .. go for the BF AT's or Cooper ST's. The problem I see with the General Grabber is how easily you can get one if you need to replace it?

If you do decide to replace the tyres get the dealer to do it before delivery. They should have an existing arrangement with a tyre shop and should be able to get a better deal on your behalf. I did the same when I got my Defender ... got the General Grabbers replaced with BF muddies before delivery .. only cost me $150.

Henry.

Well after more digging... as Grey Landy said, they are in fact light truck tyres. Interestingly, the only person I could find that sold them was the dealer, and he wanted $385 a tyre !!

I asked him if he would swap them, and he isn't interested/ is unable. I rang 3 or 4 tyre shops and asked if they could trade them, and they showed no interest at all. In fact, most hadn't heard of them.

So, it would seem that I'm pretty much stuck with them. On the positive side, I believe they are at least 8 ply, and they look pretty reasonable. I believe a good portion of our off road activity will be on sand.

Here is a link to them.

Mate...You are putting the money up for this car, not the dealer!

Tell him that you want the tyres replaced and that is that! Otherwise, jam the Landy as far up his arse as you can get it.

Car salesmen are only just - and I do mean just - a level up from kiddie fiddlers. They have no morals, no integrity and no self respect. Take advantage of that and hit them where it hurts...by threatening to take your business somewhere else unless you get what you want.

Now is the best opportunity to play the spoilt brat and chuck a massive tantie to get your own way.

Micka.

I had the Generals on mine when it was new and as far as I was concerned they were fine. Not an outstanding tyre but pretty good all-rounders.

I got 85,000km out of them and they still have legal tread, I'll be using them on the camper trailer when those tyres wear out. I used them in sand a fair bit, no problems there, and drove the Pilbara/Kimberley, where they stood up to chipping pretty well, better than the Coopers I used to have. In fact the treads are still in very good condition, they wore perfectly evenly and I never had them aligned while they were on there.

They were ok in mud, but obviously nowhere near as good as a proper muddie.

I considered getting some more when I replaced them and the local tyre dealer could get them at $220 each, but really wanted something slightly more agressive and went for BFGs.

Had GG's since new, they've done 30000k, including 2 Cape trips and 1 Simpson, drop em down to 20 psi in the sand they'll get you anywhere, no flats and heaps of tread left, stick with em if you have to and buy the new model with the more aggressive tread pattern when you wear em out.

ive got just over 50 000kms on mine and they are still going strong....

most of those kms are on the black stuff and without any mercy... ops: ops:

off road i havent had any problems with them and they balloon really well when the pressures are reduced.

i have had two punctures in 50 000kms and one of them was from a thorn of some description.....nothing a plug couldnt fix.

just got back from warren (buttabone cotton fields) after four days of thrashing through all sorts of thorns and scrub (chasing roos) and never had a problem.

i cant seem to wear them out to be honest.....

I'm with Tony and Frenchie on this one. Don't be offput by the Generals, as far as I'm concerned they're the best original tyre I've had on 4 Landies.

45K and heaps of wear left. The Cape and back plus numerous forays all over the place and so far not a flat.

True, muddies would give better grip, but I reckon they're not a bad unit as far as AT style tyres go.

Cheers

Like some of the others I've got Grabbers and they're an excellent tyre. Good in sand when let down to about 15 - 18psi and are wearing just great.
I've not done much rock work but what I have hasn't chipped them at all.

Hardly a sign of wear at 30,000klms and will try to get more when they do runout of tread.
I want one for another spare I'm taking to the Kimberly end of this month and have been quoted $231 for a 235 x 85 x 16 which I don't think is bad.

I had BFGs on my Disco and they were virtually worn out at 44,000klms!
