    Series 1 Station Wagon

I posted this as part of another thread but didn't get any response as it was sort of off topic - so here it is again.

Can someone tell me the difference between a standard series 1 swb with a hard top canopy and a series 1 swb station wagon - I know about the different canopy (safari roof and alpine windows) and the the 4 individual sideways seats in the back in the station wagon and the rear door - but are there any other differences?

    Thanks

I'm sure you would include the side windows in the canopy setup - I think all UK spec commercial LR hardtops are windowless.

From my recollection of things I've read in books - there MIGHT have been a Station Wagon badge at that time, but apart from that I can't think of anything.

I think they came with deluxe trim - or did that only start with S2?

Nope Series Is had delux trim as well.
When I get a chance I might look into my Series I Green Bible - AFAIK there was a mention of trim and other bits but these were mainly cosmetic.

    Hi Garry,
Apart from the items you've mentioned they were possibly fitted with a rear step. Do you know of John H from Bungendore? He used to own a very complete SWB Series 1 Station Wagon, factory blue in colour. It required restoration but I recently heard that he sold it and a number of his other Series 1's to help fund his '48 Series 1 restoration. He may be worthwhile contacting for further information. He's a member of the ACT Land Rover Club.

    S1 Station Wagon

I think the size of the side windows in the rear h/top of the station wagon are bigger. I may know of one thats available, where abouts are you and I will check for you.

From 1948 to about 51 there was a coach built station wagon, with wind up windows (or wind down), a one piece windscreen and a full width tailgate. The bodies were made for Land Rover by two outside companies, one I think was Pickfords, can't remember the other.

They cost more than double what a standard Land Rover cost, so were not popular. I have seen one in Australia, at Cooma I think.

They were the 80" Tickford Station Wagon. From the nature of the first email I don't think that was the one being referred to.

The later Series 1 Station Wagons were very similar to the hardtops.

Hey all,yes it should have a rear step and a station wagon badge.i think the side windows are the same size as normal ones,it wasnt to the series 2 that the side windows went larger and sliding glass, there are a few tickfords out here.there were 3 bought out for the snowy scheme.i had one for a while.i think the 86" s/w also had a door stop rod fitted as part of the delux trim kit.
