    300tdi vacuum pump fix

Sorry to bother, just had 180k service today and mechanic pointed out that the vacuum pump on the 300 Tdi Disco was starting to leak.
Chasing around some forums there used to be a detailed repair documented floating around, but the web sites which had this info appear to have closed down, (landroverace and 4wdcentral).
Does anyone have a copy or any details on the repair of the vacuum pump.
    regards

I helped a bloke repair his recently. We drilled out the head of the rivets then punched them out, one at a time.

After punching one out, we drilled a clearance hole one side and a tapping hole the other side. It was then tapped and a machine screw fitted and tightened.

Thanks, did you have any troubles doing this? Also how has it gone, no recurrences or other problems created by doing this.

I did similar to Ron except drilled through for a neat fit on stainless M5 screws, and used a nylock nut at the back.

I took the pump out to do it. You just have to make sure the engine is rotated so the cam lobe for the vacuum pump is facing away before you put the pump back in.

I fixed mine a few months ago.
Removed the pump (didn't fuss about where the lobe was). drilled out the rivets on my bench drill. Made a new gasket from gasket paper (SupaCheap). Screwed it all back together with m5 and locknuts.
    Put it back in.
All up took about 3 hours on a Sat arvo.
    Just saved $500.00 (you beauty).

The worst you can do is destroy the pump by miss drilling the rivets and you'll have to buy a new one anyway - what have you got to lose .....

Yeah - Ace's site had a good article with pictures and all but the site has gone. Might be re-posted if he has a new site but I couldn't find it.

    Hi Guys,

Good info on dismantling and re-assembling the pump body but surely there's more to it than that? I've read elsewhere that it's the welsh plugs that the oil often leaks from and that's where it seems to be coming from on mine too.

So, once you get it apart, what else has to be done and what parts do you use? Or was it just leaks from the rivetted join you needed to fix? Thanks.

If your welsh plugs are leaking oil you have serious problems ! If the diaphram is split then you will be up for a newy so give it a go, i used loctite 501 to fix a split in a fish tank pump that runs 24/7 and after a year its still going strong.
