    P38 key fob options

I am entering my 10th year of Land Rover ownership with a new 1999 p38. Just enough scratches so I don't mind getting her dirty.

Having had her for a few weeks most of the idiosyncrasies have been ironed out but the key fob issue seems fairly ugly on the P38. I have one working fob and the other is occasionally working when it has new batteries (for a day or so). Interestingly the key still opens and starts the car when the fob has no batteries which surprised me as I expected the car to shut down.

So, what I have worked out:
    (1) I can get a key from LR for $450 any time I like although they take over a month to arrive.
    (2) The key fob appears to be sealed, I am not sure I can open it and rebuild the board without ruining the plastic case.
    (3) There is a UK company that offer replacement P38 key fobs for about $200 AU see Car Alarm remotes & immobiliser keys They can however only supply the 433 mhz fobs not the 315 mhz and I have no idea what mine is.

There must be another solution, one that makes it easier and cheaper to replace fobs in the years I am going to have the car and drag it around the beach and mud. The car is old and cheap enough now that I am not concerned with ‘Super Locking’ just keyless entry would be nice.

One option might be to fit an aftermarket central lock actuator with remote to the driver’s door lock. When you push the door lock button up or down the whole car does lock or unlock. This might get around the whole LR key fob issue replacing it with a cheap fob and key for the ignition.

Has anyone tried this or come up with any other solutions ?

    Cheers, Steve.

It certainly sounds like a faulty fob. There's also this company in UK: Range Rover

You should be able to get a LR dealer to tell you the remote frequency base on the VIN. Those frequencies apply to the Disco2's don't know about the RR P38. You'll need to get the new fob programmed in to the BCU.

A P38A has very robust immobilisation. Lose your key and it will never start again unless you get another keyfob that works with the car - or the lockset is replaced (about $1600)

Will a new key ordered from a dealer work?

Quite possibly not (ask me how I know) if the lockset has been replaced and the dealer didn't update LR's database (ask me how I know).

Will a key from an aftermarket supplier work? Many will not. However, that link does look promising - if you can live without your key for a while. Just hope that it doesn't get lost in transit!

Would I buy a P38A fob off eBay? No, I'd rather buy the Sydney Harbour Bridge. It's more likely to be a good buy. Any fob bought from eBaY will - and I say again, will be a total waste of money. If you really think you want to take the chance, I have a couple of fobs I'm willing to sell.

How can I make this clearer? Hmm. I don't think I can.

BTW, this is a pic of the inside of my keyfob. Note the switch top that had come adrift from the switch thus rendering the unlock function inoperable.

I'm about to bring some goodies over from Rimmer Bros for my car, noticed they have P38a Key Fobs for 94 GBP - about $215.

Looks like the real deal, not a generic replacement - you have to supply your VIN.

I can't imagine it would cost much to post over either, a little fella like that.

There could be other companies too - haven't really looked though.
Personally I like Rimmers. Famous Four go alright too.

About 4 years ago I sourced a replcement key fob from Austral LR in Wooloongabba - t'was 'only' $300 and took just 2 weeks !!

Providing your lockset hasn't been changed and LR records not updated. Alto Artarmon changed my lockset and never updated LR records. A replacement fob I bought from LR in Oz won't fit and won't work. LR Customer Care tells me it's not their problem -they can't interfere in how a dealer runs his business.

Hi All, Learning something new every day on this, here is where I am currently up to:
    1) The Remote Key Ltd company mentioned by dm_td5 will only supply to the UK.
    2) I am betting that the lockset has not been changed, the key fobs certainly look 8 years old. I hope this is the case Ron, it's an expensive mistake for a dealer to make for you. Very suprised at LR Australia's attitude on this.
    3) Rimmer bros look like a strong option. Need to do a little research on how they come by them, there is still the 315 vs 433 mhz issue although as Hardy points out you supply your VIN. Another piece of luck is that the dead fob has its original sticker and at least I now know I am ordering key 2.

I have managed to prise the case open without damage. In the end I used a pair of circlip openers. It is now with a TV repairman which seems odd but they fix remotes all the time. From this it may be repaired or hopefully I will at least find out the mhz.

In separating the key from the fob I also now know that the key works independently of the fob. ie. I can get a blank cut and use this without a fob to open and start the car. Started looking for a blank but they are not so easy to find:
    1) Local LR dealer will not sell me one or even a cut one except as a full assembly with a fob.
    2) Tried one key cutter but will try a few more locally.
    3) Can get one on Ebay from Hong Kong for about $8 but it is the replacement shaft for the fob unit without a head.
    4) Can probably get a blank from Car Alarm remotes & immobiliser keys

Looking over the Rave I think there is still the possibility of installing an aftermarket mechanical remote to the driver’s door lock which will come with a couple of new (and in future easily replaceable fobs). With this idea it would not replace any component just operate the door luck button mechanically.

    Regards, Steve.

PS. Hardy, like the look of your bullbars. If I smash up what is left of my current bumper at the Fraser Island Fishing comp in May I'll be calling.

    1. Try ordering by part no. ASR1044H (key blank) - this is the flip out part of the lock - See TSB 86/06/97

    2. A local locksmith had full plain key blanks. (He was in the adjoining unit to one I owned and he was a Disco owner....)

    Hi All,

If anyone is interested I have the following updates:

    * My fob was easily repaired by my local TV repair guy and the main problem was the battery shorting on the circuit board. I pick it up tomorrow so the truth will be if it will re-synch, although I have high hopes now that the red led is working again

    * The mechanical key is only $33 from the stealer. Picking up tomorrow (the spare parts guy always goes home at 16:25 and no one else can help me - don't ask how I know). Of course there is no guarantee if it will match my locks (don't ask Ron about this) and regardless it is my bill. If it does not look close from an eyeball I'll be jacking up.

    Cheers, Steve.
