Disco II Transfer case VS Defender Trans case

Does Landrover use the same transfer case in the Defender and the Disco II?
Does the Defender transfer case have the same ratios as a Disco's?
Does the defender transfer case have a central diff lock?
Will a transfer case out of a defender bolt straight into a Disco?

I think the transfer case is the same, but the ratios are not the same. Some people have swapped out the transfer case from their disco for a defender unit as they have lower ratios and can offset the effect of larger tyres. Only works in low range though. The defender case should have a diff lock and it should bolt up to the disco.

Why would you do it though? If you have damaged your disco one you could put in a defender unit. If you just want better ratios you might find it cheaper to just change your CW&P gearing to 4.11 which would improve driveability in high range and low range.

You could do both the defender transfer case and the 4.11's and your final ratio in low range would be great! Could cost you about $5k though!!

My disco does not have the internals for Diff lock, and I would like to put a transfer case in with a diff lock. I am thinking of trying to find a complete wreck to purchase for the parts, and there are a couple of wrecked Defenders around going up for auction,

Not quite correct. Low range is exactly the same between a Disco transfer case and a defender one, but the defender has a lower high range, 1.4:1 in the Defender and I can't remember if the disco is 1.2:1 or 1.22:1. All defenders have a centre diff lock.

Disco2 has remote cable linkages, Defender has hard connections
Disco2 has 1.2 High range, Defender has 1.4
    Low range is the same
Disco2 has a range selection switch for the ECU
Disco2 does not have a speedo drive
Disco2 did not have CDL at all in certain years
Disco2 has Q (quiet) designation gears.
Disco2 has a DC pattern front output flange, not a regular rover pattern. These can be swapped easily.

If you do the swap there will be 3 key things. The high range ratio will be different, the low range remap on the throttle position sensor will be lost. and if you have a manual transmission then you will also lose the use of cruise control unless you correct the speedo to suit the gearing.

BTW, make sure it is an LT230 that you get, not a county etc with a LT95.
    Cheers

    Thanks for all the inputs.
Would a transfer case out of a manual bolt up the same as one out of an Auto?
I think I will keep my search to Discos, even though the lower High range of the defender may help when I go to larger tyres.
I will have to do another search on this forum to re-familarize myself as to what years of Discos have the diff lock internals.

    I didn't think so but wasn't sure. I assumed a Q gear wasn't as strong.

From what I have read, the "Q" gears are 1.2 (disco) ratio only.
