I see some people use K & N filters on their Rovers.
I found this on another site.

Unfortunately the damage here isnt necessarily caused by a filter.
Being a direct injection engine, take a close look at the injector spray pattern on the piston crown. that pattern should be INSIDE the combustion bowl, not on top of the crown. The wear marks around the upper bore area are most likely caused by irregular and incomplete ignition along with washing down the bore and ring land area along with other possibilites as stated by aragorn in the post.

Either that or the wrong body/tip combination. Bit hard to say without seeing the injectors and getting the numbers off them.
You can see what looks like a 5 point "star" pattern on the rim of the crown and dish.
This is supposed to be a pattern on the inside wall of the dish right at the bottom of it.
Looking at it, I would say it possibly has the wrong or very coked up tips installed and isnt spraying correctly.
The crowns also looked a bit washed out also. The valve reliefs are clearly visible in cyls 1&2 as is clean metal but 3 & 4 are black and sooted with not quite as much washed spots.
Plus as the wear rings arent going all the way round and are clearly visible on the rotational sides of the bores, its shows a possibility of ..... pardon the pun.... premature injection ....which makes the piston crown rock on the gudgeon as the actual ignition should be inside the dish below the load centre of the piston.
Generally at this point, there isnt quite enough compression to actually combust completely, but early partial ignition can occur and be masked by actual ignition a few degrees later.
