    R380 oil cooler

    hey all,

i did a search and found bits and pieces relating to this.

    i have a 1998 def110 (ex 300tdi) with R380 gearbox.
it does NOT have a oil cooler.

i have seen mods that have converted them to run a oil cooler.

can some please give a list of parts, and if LR parts there respective part numbers.

i rang a Landrover wrecker and spares place and they couldnt find anything listed for the R380 or the lt77. I have read that the TD5's had them and some 300tdi 130's. Is this correct?

i dont want to just run a pipe up and back like the TD5's, id like to run an actual oil cooler.

i also would like info on fitting etc, right down to the simple stuff, like where the cover place is that gets replaced with the valve housing. etc etc

    cheers, Serg

You used to be able to find it on the Ashtrans sites.

I fitted an oil cooler when I put the 300Tdi and R380 in my rangie.

I picked up the thermatic housing from a wrecker - it came off an LT77 from a rangie (apparently part of a towing package option).

I used straight bspp to jic fittings (with dowty seals for the bspp end) and had hydraulic hoses made to run to an oil cooler.

If you look at the left side of the gearbox case, near the bracket for the flexible mount, you should see a cast aluminium housing attached to the case with about 6mm bolts.

This housing will just be used to blank off the oil ports. It is removed and replaced with the thermatic valve housing. Note there is another type of housing that just has a temp sensor and is not for use with oil cooler.

Both fittings (in and out) face forward from the thermatic housing.

Uninformed not wishing to hi-jack your thread but for a TD5 is it a simple matter of taking off the oil pipe that is there ? and replacing it with a line to an oil cooler and then returning the line.

Assuming there's an pump in the gear box will it cope with a line running to the front through an oil cooler and back to the gear box.

I’ve got an oil cooler off a Range Rover one of the “long dimpled” ones that I’m thinking could be mounted below the air conditioner at the front with a bit of modification to the fibreglass nose.

I also have a radiator design one which probably cools better but would take more oil and require I think, the pump to work harder and would need to be mounted in the guard.

If I need to start another thread happy to do so if there are any problems

    thanks John,

no worries Scott, its a good question as the R380 from the td5's is what one part supplier is recommending and i would like to know the same. I don't just want to run a "loop" pipe, but a dedicated oil cooler.

regarding placement: i have a trayback, and as the engine bay is already crowed and hot, i was thinking about mounting it under the tray somewhere? any thoughts or things i should consider?

    cheers, Serg

    thanks Dave,

thats good info to put a kit together.

I guess the main thing for us over this side of the pond, is the lack of variants that you guys have and the shear numbers of second hand vehicles or parts warehouses to source stuff from. On top of that, freight is horrendously expensive.

So the next thing for us is to try and find things that are available here on different models that will fit our needs.

At this point im going to source the housing from a td5 r380, if theres any reason not to i'd like to know.

For the rest of the cooling system, i will just by an oil cooler from a auto spares place and get the hoses and fittings from a hydraulic shop. My set up will be custom as it wont be going forward to the engine bay at this stage.

    Cheers, Serg

Serg, the XD Defender (Wolf) ones are a 'proper' oil cooler, ie. it looks like an Earls, Setrab, etc type of cooler, not a crappy serpentine coil or dimple plate ATF style.

If you have an EPC just punch in the cooler number, ESR3229 and it shows the cooler and how it's mounted in a frame between the diagonal bonnet supports.

    Thanks Rick,

im thinking that with my set up, winch mounted close to the Ac condensor and from the top of chassis rail up, that its not the best place for a cooler, plus the fact that the other 3 coolers there arent getting the job done as it is.

my main concern right at this point in time is with the thermo housing valve. thats my starting point and thats what im trying to find out about, the rest of the system could be oem or custom without much trouble at all, ut the valve housing has to be right.

I wrote a reply the other night, looks like it never made it to the board.

I bought mine from TRS in SA.
I did stipulate Defender but the t/stat housing is the same regardless of car, but i suspect the pipes might be off a disco or RRC as it appears they suit the dunny brush type cooler, but it was reasonably priced IIRC.
