Stuee's 101 Rebuild

Thanks all for the advice. The apportioning valve is working so the brakes are mostly good now. I need a run to bed in the disk brakes, lock out the apportioning valve so I can check the rear drums are adjusted right but otherwise I'm happy with them now.

Some general shots of the tray on yesterday, it looks like a dune buggy atm. I had made new mounting rubbers for the tray out of 9x50mm strip. Unfortunately, these are two wide compared to the 5ish mm original mounts. This means some of the side mount bolts (which I hadn't considered when making the rubbers) dont line up. I've source some rubber in the mean time to start making new ones once its back from the exhaust shop.

Feet will be up for the day and probably tomorrow then back into it when it comes back with its new exhaust.

I got the 101 back from the Genie Exhaust today. I'm really happy with the job they did and compared to the tilt tray company, their service was top notch. The note is just right, not to in your face, but still a lovely burble.

They had to do a step down from the headers so they could use the original flared connections. I think I will have to relocate the handbrake pushrod to the other side of the exhaust down pipe.

Thanks to Ben (Isuzurover) I've now got a repaired seat frame which I've applied the final coats of paint to tonight. I'll be dropping both frames to the upholsterer tomorrow as well as the new seat bases I've had to knock up this arvo.

Looks good Stuee - I am not sure whether the flex joint is good or bad as I have had issues with them in other vehicles BUT the 101 is notorious for breaking the rear ends off the exhaust manifolds so the flex joint might provide a bit of protection. I don't see one on the drivers side though.

Also I see that you have the cross over pipe from the driver's side to the passenger side crossing under the gearbox where it could be damaged - is that how they were done originally? The reason I ask is my system is not original and the crossover pipe is rear of the brake srum and passes over the top of the rear prop shaft.

Looks good and you must be quite chuffed with how it is all turning out and that it is nearing completion.

Supposedly the flex joint will mean any expansion and contraction between the two headers is isolated from the rigid Y-pipe. The main guy at the exhaust shop said he has also had problems so didn't want to fit two. I think its only there because when I was running through with them what I wanted I mentioned that it was imperative that they do their best to protect the headers from any excess forces, either from expansion and contraction, vibration, or hanging unnecessary weight off them.

I have no idea where the original cross over ran but I'm happy with where they've put it for now. Its up quite high and if I end up rubbing or bumping it I'm doing some pretty extreme off road tracks. If it comes to that I'll change it then (will be an excuse to tinker with the engine...).

I'm very happy with how its turning out, the only problem is the last two weeks while I've been off from work I've been throwing money at it to get the thing finished. I've been avoiding checking the credit card because I think I'll get a rude shock when I do!

Well stuee, you've done one heck of a lot of work that many people would have paid out to get done, so you've earnt the right to farm some out now! I know that doesn't help pay the CC off, but at least don't feel too bed about it.
I'm really looking forward to seeing it on the road one day real soon.

That looks to be very neatly done fella!! Well done!:)

The standard exhaust did have the RHS exhaust crossing over above the rear tailshaft so it couldn't get damaged.
I like the flexi joint......anything to help the exhaust manifolds must be good.
The standard muffler was up between the rear diff and last cross member.
I think you could have a problem with heat from the mufflers position getting the floor too hot especially if you want to lay rubber floor mat in the back.
Stuee its all looking good.........I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for you............you will get to enjoy one of these tuff little Landrovers.

You're looking at it the wrong way. It's is a high end foot warmer for the rear passengers :p

Dropped the seat frames off to the upholsterers today. Should get them back next Thursday. They look pretty sharp with the silver hammertone arms and black base and back board. There's still another coat of black to go on some parts, I was only finishing them up yesterday and didn't want to give it to them with wet paint.

Every time I drive past I have a quick look to see if the 101 is on show, but no, the door is down. Usually there is a silver Commodore in the drive way.:p
