And as if by magic, here's a pic of mine minus engine! The Bell Housing length from engine face to back face is 200mm, or if you include the spacer that carries the reverse light switch and (I'm assuming) first motion shaft and lay shaft bearings, 225mm. Now the V8 is out Im more confident I can shoe horn the Cummins and Spicer in there!!!!! Cheers for now.
From Bell Housing face to rear PTO cover (output face) is 680mm. I believe the internals to be the same as the early Range Rover spec, but not sure on the transfer case ratios. High ratio gears are available. The Fairey Overdrive suited to early RR's fits. The gearbox and transfer case are all one piece. Engine oil is to be used in the gearbox, not gear oil. Others will tell you more tho as that is the extent of my knowledge... so far.
Its been done before and works and fits well.
finding the bell housing is the problem.
A bloke who owned a landrover spares place at silverwater many years ago did it as he had access to 101 landy parts too.
Because of the short belhousing minimal chassis mods were needed.
I think he used disco axles as to get disc brakes.
I've just measured the LT77 in SWIMBO's Ser 2 SWB project and that is the same length as my 101's LT95 +/- 30mm, so here's a pic of where the handbrake of the LT95 would end up in your Series 2.... if you sit the V8 where the 2.286 was and retain the original front..
And.... you'll end up with a rear prop length of approx 410mm which will be fine on a STD SWB.. It's getting a bit steep on our project as the chassis is ex mil..
Well I'd be putting the gearbox in the standard position for a 110 and be fitting coil springs to the chassis. I have a 110 so getting the bits would be easy enough. I'd want to run the standard front panel but I would use 110 inner guards and probably the doors as well. I'd modify the firewall so the standard 110 floor and seat box could be used also. I think I'd use the 110 wiring harness and fuse box. Hopefully I could shoehorn the 110 radiator in there. I may even use the 110 windscreen on the series firewall and modify the series 2 roof to fit. I'd use the 110 seats and wipers. And it would have my p76 efi motor with coil packs and megasquirt efi.
