    101 Winch - Cable Swage

Does anyone have a pic of the original fitted winch cable swage that was on the 101. It was designed to be able to fit down the pulley fairlead and through the chassis mounted guide pulley brackets.

    Thanks

Was it a swage or a splice? Usually a swage will be bigger in diameter than a splice. And by the way, there are a lot of winch cables of all sorts in the current auction offerings from Pickles.

I have a picture on a old thread some where on this site...........you will have to go back about 10 years.
    It was a swage........a special one.............very compact.
When I got the new winch cables made many years ago it was a great problem trying to find something like the original.
I came up with a stainless steel marine cable eye which had to be tested after swaging because of the short grip length which was longer than the original, but could still be worked though the front chassis pulleys at the wheel arch.

I looked at making a cable stage eye like the original.
The problem was the grip length was so short no one wanted to swage it let alone test it.

Hi Ron - thanks - this is the link 101 now called 102 ?

I did not think the pics you put in there were of the original 101 cable swage - but are you sure the one you had the measurements on is the correct 101 version?

Oh on another issue - remember those nice cables you got made up for us - I still have not put mine on - have you? If so did you have any issue with the 8mm cable vs the 9mm cable and by the measurements the swage, it should have fitted down the fairlead hole and hence around the bends on the other two pulleys - did it and any issues?

    Thanks

The photos of the black swage and the ruler is the original swage.
The the replacement winch cable that were made up are totally correct cable wise.
I have been using my replacement cable for years.......in fact since that old thread.
I usually winch from the back.
On occasion I do winch from the front.
The only difference between the original cable and the replacement one is its a bit harder to run though the chassis pulleys on the chassis near the front wheel as the replacement cables swaging is longer .
I recently done this exercise on a 4x4 trip stuck in the bush.
To feed the cable and swage though the fair head always required a 15/16 spanner??? From memory to remove one pulley in the fair head regardless of what cable was used.
I carry that spanner with my winching gear.

I may add the replacement cable has never given trouble other than beening slightly harder to feed though.
The replacement cable grips the capstan just as it should and slips as it should without tension.
The standard cable length was 65 mtrs.
Out of about 10 made I had 2 which were 75 mtrs long.
I am using a 75 mtr cable without trouble......it just all fits on the storage drum OK.
I don't remember who got the other extra long cable.
    It may have been you.
