    Replacing a front Pinion Bearing

    Hi Brains Trust

I'm believe I need to replace the Pinion Bearing in my front diff. A couple of questions come to mind.
Is the diff the same size as a 109/110?
Can I use a standard Salsbury spreader?
Is the diff the same as a dana diff?
Is there any traps for young (I use that term figeratively) players?

    Thanks in advance

    Steve

    Hi Steve,

The basic diff is the same as other LR sals BUT the axles are larger, so the two side gears are larger but not such an issue if just doing the pinion.

The spreader should be the same as the housing is the same but having said that I have only used a home mate version which worked well.

Well Dana and Sals are the same basic design and many parts such as gears are interchangeable, but given the common Sals in many LRs I would just go the Sals parts to be sure.

I have not done a pinion but I have had the rear diff out to put in a detroit locker and change some bearings. Hopefully someone will be along to discuss the pros and cons of using crush washers vs fixed thickness washers on the pinion - in the mean time you might research this - but I dont know.

The only thing I would say to watch out for is the spreader. The one I used would sometimes pop off - sometimes just falling off but others displaying a bit of tension - not sure it is really needed as I could also use a big lever to prise the diff out without the spreader and to put it back, a big rubber mallet helped.

    Thanks Garry

I have access to a regular Salisbury spreader so I could see if that fits I've had mixed info about if it fits so thanks for confirming that. I hope someone feels like commenting on the washer but I'll do a bit of a search to see if I can find some info.

    Cheers

the spreaders are slightly different but pretty much interchangable, filing an undercutting angle on the pin(so the top of the locating pin is wider than its base) helps immensly with it staying in place, as does cleaning out the holes on the diffs.

    other tricks

tap popsticks into the hole behind the pins to help keep them tight in the holes
tie wire the spreader around the axles (like a ubolt)
run a ratchet strap through the diff center and strap up to the chassis before you start pulling it out

as it comes out is as it goes in. if it was tight coming out and loose going in (or vice versa) somethings wrong,

    good luck

Some really good tips there. So your saying that with the standard spreader and the modification you suggested should fit?

    Cheers

almost, both types of spreader will work on either diff, the pegs are normally square but with time and abuse they get rounded, undercutting them gets rid of the rounding.

if you want to be really rough you can simply wrap either side of the housing with a chain and then "bend" the axle towards the front or rear of the vehicle so the bowing of the axle opens the housing. Rough but it works on the side of the road or in a caravan park.
