9.00 16 Tyres

Just remember the standard 101 rims are not safety rims so you need to be careful on what tyres are fitted from this aspect. Limits options. Some say modern tyres will work fine, others say not the case - I dont know.

Also remember that the old 9.00x16 tyres are about 34.5/35" diameter, your XZLs are in the region of 36" diameter and 285/85r16 are about the same diameter but a bit wide for 6.5" wide rims. 285/75r16 are a more common size but have a smaller diameter are also a bit wide.

Craddock sell the widened 101 rims and they look the same as the originals on the vehicle

At around $1,500 plus freight that might put me out of the game, but they are pretty nice. Will see what local widening will cost if it comes to that. I have no issues running modern tyres on older rims, never had an issue with and Series rim I’ve done that with and I rarely put myself in a position where I have to air down a long way, usually just for comfort on extended trips on gravel roads.

I think AJ had some for a while so check with him. Also there are brands of 9.00x16 tyres overseas so importing might be an option.

Struggling to find anything that will fit the standard rims other than the XZL’s. Found some Chinese tyres that may work, but can’t find anyone in Australia that imports them and minimum quantities apply - like 50 to 100 and I really don’t need that many... 😁

Plenty of options for slightly wider rubber that will fit wider rims, so that may be the way to go but I’d like to keep a standard set of rims as well, but those rims from Craddocks will set me back around $400 each (and I need 6) by the time all fees and charges and freight are paid for so not a cheap option, but a lot cheaper than buying 6 new XZL’s...

Going to get a price to widen my rims. AJ seems to be on Holiday at the moment so haven’t been able to chat to him about any of this yet.

Have some decisions to make.

I wound not go for them but they are an option.

Also I am sure the Maroon coloured 101 camper that has been around for a while had Silverstone 117MT 285/16s on standard rims - the attached chart has wheel width as 7.5 so not too far off. I have 315s on 8" rims and they are ok.

See these pics of the 101 with them on - look fine - zoom in on the tyres and have a look - they are a bit less in diameter than standard 9.00x16 and a lot less than your 255/100R16s.

Well after a lot of research, I think the only thing for it is to get the rims modified and fit a wider tyre. AJ is back from holidays and I was chatting to him this morning - he has a rim mob just up the road and if I supply just the centres from my rims, they will fit a brand new 8" outer - which has the safety bead rolled into them as well so one extra bit worth doing it for when running tubeless tyres. This is then quite a cheap option and I'll prime and paint them myself after that.

Tyres will be the Nangkang 315/75/16 AT5 - very reasonably priced at around $250 each and will do fine for what I want - they are available all over Australia now, even in this size and my research shows they are not a terrible tyre. Next cheapest was over double the price so these will do. They do a couple of M/T's as well in this size but these aren't needed for what I do with the vehicle.

Will still be a $2,000 plus exercise by the time I do 6 rims and have 6 new tyres fitted but a much cheaper option than anything else and waaay better then the $900 each I've been quoted for replacement XZL's...

Been running AJs widen wheels for years now.
Original centre on modern safety rim.
Greatly opens up tyres that are available including radial/tubless options.
Wider wheels stops drivers wheel foot step damage.
I ended up getting six of them.

I presume when have std centers put in new wide rims you can specify whatever offset you like?

Correct.............reading back pages 20 to about 27 in this thread gives alot of information on AJs wheels .
